INDIANAPOLIS, IN

Mid-America Speedway decided to reschedule its opening round due to conflicting dates with the rain-out at Gas City, Indiana. This would make it a Father's Day race on Sunday afternoon, under a blazingly hot, sunny day. It was a busy day at the fairgrounds, as they were also hosting a car show and a horse show.

In the first heat race, it was Joe Garrison (above, and below, center) taking the lead for two laps before Barry Benkert Jr., on a loaner biker, dived underneath him to take the win.

The second heat saw B.J. Fesselmeyer (above, left) and Paul "Kamikaze" Huggins (above, right) battling each other, with Fesselmeyer taking the win.

Garrison and Huggins each got two wins along with two second-place finishes to advance to the main event. Fesselmeyer would also make the main after scoring two wins. Benkert finished ahead of the Weicht brothers and Brad Amburgey for the final spot in the A main.

Huggins would start from gate one, with Garrison in two, next to Fesselmeyer, with Benkert on the outside in gate four. When the tapes went up, Benkert was left chasing the trio of riders as they went through turn one side by side. As they exited turn two, it was Garrison on the inside, with Fesselmeyer right by his side. After the first of four laps, it was Garrison in the lead, with Huggins and Fesselmeyer going at it for second until Fesselmeyer drifted high.

Meanwhile, Benkert was gaining ground, and he eventually got around Fesselmeyer for third place. On the final lap, he was able to get by Huggins in the final turn for second, behind Garrison. Former Indy champion Garrison had seemed to get faster as the day went on, as he won his last two heat races and got good start in the main and led all four laps for the A main-event win.
