AUBURN, CA
Billy Janniro has had quite a lock on the Scratch main events at Auburn, California's Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway. With four consecutive victories, he has been unbeatable this season - until Friday night, when Scott Brant (10, above) pulled off a win in the Scratch main event. Always knocking at the door, Scott scored second-place finishes in Scratch and Handicap mains last week, and he's been racing very strong this season. Brant was able to put it all together and get inside of Janniro.
Having enough speed to work the inside and middle of the track, Brant was able to keep Janniro just a bikelength back. Brant gave up the inside lane one to Janniro and, racing out of lane two, Brant was able to beat Janniro inside to turn one. Brant held on to a short lead while Janniro tried to pass as the two seasoned professional riders put on quite a racing show.
"Billy and all the top guys here know me, and we trust each other - we can bump elbows a little and race hard; it makes it fun," said Brant. "The track was completely different than last week. I like it with a little more dirt on it, but I was able to overcome that and just race hard, and it turned out good."
Janniro was second, Auburn's Bart Bast came out of outside lane four and finished third, and Charlie Venegas, racing out of lane three, finished fourth.
Billy Janniro (14, above) was still able to find his way to the winners' podium - something he has been able to do every week at Fast Fridays. Janniro won the Handicap main event, racing off the 60-yard line, despite having to borrow a bike from Brant for both main events after a mishap in the pits sidelined his own mount. Auburn's own Tommy Hedden was second, and Bryan Yarrow was third.
Colfax, California's Thomas Reich (12, above) won the Division Two main event for the second week in a row. Moving up from the Youth Division this year, Reich has been successful making the switch to riding 500cc bikes. Auburn's Cody Ciciarelli was second, and Matt Drury was third.
Division Three was won by Bobby Northam. Second was Billy Vaughn, and Auburn's Billy Parino finished third.
The Youth Division One main event was won by P.J. Byrne, and the Youth Division Two main event was won by Derick Silva.
Hedden won round two of the Challenge Elimination Race Series after a two-lap run-off with Janniro. Hedden's name will be transferred (along with that of Charlie Venegas, who won the first challenge) into the final Challenge Elimination Race on September 3. Five riders will then race in the season's finale.
