INDUSTRY HILLS, CA
Former National Champion "Flyin' Mike" Faria (above) turned in a vintage performance and captured the main-event victory on Harley Night at Industry Speedway.
Faria started in gate one and entered turn one with "Battlin' Buck" Blair right next to him. Faria stuck to the inside line while Blair tried to make the outside work. They were side by side on the back straight, but Faria's line proved better and he secured the lead entering turn three. Jimmy Fishback went under Blair for second and set his sights on Faria's lead. Fishback wouldn't get close enough to faze the leader, though, and Faria led to the checkered flag. Fishback settled for second, Blair finished third, Shawn McConnell was fourth, and Neil Facchini finished fifth.
Gino Manzares kicked off the heats with a win over Facchini. Shaun Harmatiuk won the next heat, ahead of McConnell. Jason Ramirez handed Faria his only defeat in race three. Blair ended round one with a win over Tommy Hedden.
Blair began round two by beating Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz. Hedden beat Ramirez in the next heat. Fishback held off "Fast Eddie" Castro to win event 12. Faria beat Facchini to finish the second round.
Faria opened the final round with his second straight win. Facchini beat Hedden in the next heat. Fishback scored his second consecutive victory in the penultimate heat. McConnell closed out the heats with a victory over Castro.
Blair and Fishback were gift-wrapped transfers into the main after Harmatiuk and Ramirez were penalized for touching the tapes. Faria won the second semi, with Facchini following him into the main.
McConnell trapped from the outside and won the last-chance qualifier to book the final spot in the main-event field.
Joey Holt (above) jumped out to a big lead on the first lap and never looked back en route to victory in the Second Division main event. Drew Coats finished second, Brad Moreau was third, Justin Weeks finished fourth, Kim Stevens was fifth, and Geoff Herkner was sixth.
Former sidecar competitor Chris Jones (above) led all four laps and won the Third Division main event for his first speedway main-event victory. Kevin Johnson was second, Gene Stone finished third, Rod Requejo was fourth, DeWayne Stark finished fifth, and Mike Schultz was sixth.
Rocco Scopellite (9, above) used patience to get past his competitors and win the Youth main event. Nicky Reimer finished second and Michael Wells was third.
Reimer didn't go home empty-handed, though, as he was victorious in the Pee Wee main event. Victoria Matthews finished second, Nick Varner was third, and Michael Wells finished fourth.
Brian Motis & Brandi McElroy withstood a fierce attack from all three of their opponents to win the Sidecar main event. Joe Jones & Jimmy Olsen were second, Sean Driggers & Missy Driggers finished third, and Gerard Jackson & Dave German were fourth.
