GREENE, NY
Riders were treated to the best track of the season at Action Park East on August 22. The surface was smooth and consistent, thanks to the help of a new track drag. Making the evening even better was the fact that the behind-the-bars FMX team, led by Casey Higgins and Tony Fontana, were on hand to do a show before the races and during intermission.
The Handicap heats started off with Jerry Harman taking a win from the 40-yard line, over Tuff McBride. Dee Holden won the second heat from the zero, with Adam "The Missile" Mittl in hot pursuit for second place.
Casey Donholt (above) came all the way from the 50 to take the win in the first semifinal. Second place went to Harman, with Mikey Buman finishing third for the last transfer. Holden took fourth, with Brian Bailey fifth.
McBride was flying in the second semi and ended up first, with Mittl just behind. The final transfer position went to Russ Cornell. Shawn "Steamboat" Engel was fourth, Dwight Basa was fifth and Cole Farwell was sixth.
McBride was strong again in his Scratch ride and took the top position, over Buman. Donholt finished ahead of Mittl when they met head to head in Scratch competition.
Donholt continued his good form in the first semi when he topped McBride. Engel was third, with Holden last.
Mittl, on his new Bully Dog Technologies-sponsored Jawa, stayed out in front of Buman as the two riders earned the two transfers in the last semifinal. Taking third was Harman, with Cornell fourth.
Harman made a great start and took command of the last-chance race to win it, with Cornell second, Holden third and Engel fourth.
Fans were looking forward to a big matchup in the Scratch main between Mittl and Donholt, but it never really materialized, as Mittl's muffler came off at the line and he missed the start. Donholt used his speed to garner the lead on his Holden's Disposal-backed Jawa, and he never looked back. McBride also had bike problems and fell to the back, which led to Harman's taking second place and Buman's taking third.
In the Handicap feature, it was all Harman, as he rode a very smooth inside line to victory. Donholt capped off a strong night with second place. Buman was third, Mittl was fourth, Cornell was fifth, and McBride fell, which left him with last place.
