INDIANAPOLIS, IN
The Mid-America Speedway event at Indiana's Marion County Fairgrounds started under some light rain as the heat races got under way. The muddy conditions suited Paul "Kamikaze" Huggins just fine, as he stormed out of the gate for the first heat race, roosting the 2008 Indy champ Wesley Oskiewicz (above, leading) and taking the win by a considerable margin. Huggins continued to ride strongly after the rain let up, winning all four of his heats. Wesley "O" had two wins and two second-place finishes, advancing to the main. B.J. Fesselmeyer and Jim Terchila (behind Oskiewicz) would join Huggins and Oskiewicz in the main.
Oskiewicz was determined to get back to his winning ways at Indy, as he dominated here last year. Huggins was confident after his impressive wins earlier, and he thought this was his best chance at beating the Chicago club rider.
When the tapes went up, Huggins and Oskiewicz were going at it side by side. Fesselmeyer eventually went down in turn three, and Terchila, to avoid the fallen rider, put it into the hay bales.
Terchila was fine, but his bike was not. As things got sorted out, Terchila was able to get Oskiewicz's backup bike for the restart. Fesselmeyer would have to start from the penalty line.
On the restart, it was once again Huggins and Oskiewicz up front, with Fesselmeyer getting a good start and battling Terchila for third. Oskiewicz pulled away for the win, ahead of Huggins. Terchila took third, with Fesselmeyer just inches behind for fourth.
