INDIANAPOLIS, INThe final race of the season at Indianapolis brought out some talented riders from New York. With the racing schedule done out east, the New Yorkers made the trek to the "Racing Capital of the World" to check out the speedway racing at Indianapolis National Speedway, just miles from the famed Brickyard.
The final races of the season were sponsored by Dreyer Honda, "The Oldest Honda Dealer in the Country." All heat and main events were run without incident. After all the main events were completed, trophies and payoffs for the night's events were given out before acknowledging the season's top three riders in each of the classes.
The great weather and a charity ride for speedway rider Mike Smith (to help with his medical bills while he battles leukemia) brought out the largest crowd of the year. The charity ride ended at the Speedway, and a lot of new faces stayed around to see some exciting speedway racing, as well as various flat-track classes, from the Mini Dirt Divas to the Vet and Open classes.
With a total of 23 speedway bikes on hand, this looked like it would be an exciting night of speedway racing. Joe Garrison (who is sponsored by Joe Collins) had pretty much wrapped up the championship, with only one loss on the season, to local Todd Eads of Avon, Indiana. It didn't take Jeremy Parsons (16) long to get used to the track, as he won a few heat races. Garrison and Marco Gautier were in hot pursuit of Parsons and New York's Adam Mittl.
The main Division One race would feature Parsons, Gautier, Mittl and Garrison, who was on a loaner bike, as his bike broke in his final heat race. This race was all about Parsons and Mittl. Gautier, in third, was close, but Garrison was struggling on the different bike. After four very quick laps, it was Parsons with the win.
Division Two's championship had already been decided, as B.J. Fesselmeyer had clinched the title the previous week. However, second place was up for grabs, between Brad Amburgey and David Weicht, both of whom made the main event. Weicht went on to finish second to champion Fesselmeyer. Chris Hathaway was third, and Amburgey finished fourth, but that garnered enough points for Amburgey to take third overall for the season.
Division Three was won by Scorpion Helmets' Jerry Huff, and Tucker Rocky's Preston Dorfmeyer and R.C. Truan rounded out the top three. Cole Farwell finished fourth. Overall, Huff took the Division Three championship, with Dorfmeyer in second and Truan in third.
During intermission, a brand-new Honda 80cc was raffled off (after tickets were sold all year long). Also, everyone got to witness a 3-year-old take a few hot laps on a 50cc bike.
After all the plaques were given out, there was a huge feast with a lot of great food. The efforts of all the track helpers, the Fat Cat, the flagmen, the concession helpers and of course the great announcer are much appreciated.
What a great year of racing at Indy this has been, with no rain-outs and fantastic racing all year long.
