SHIPPENSBURG, PA
Jake Shoemaker scored two wins and a very close second at Shippensburg Speedway's August short track. He won the 450 Stock Frame and Open Sportsman finals and finished beside Henry Wiles in the Open A final on his Montgomeryville Cycle Center/Revit/Shoei/Roy Built Suzuki.
Shoemaker started off with a close, hard-fought win in the 450 Stock Frame class, over Raun Wood, Chris Klinefelter and John Long. The order stayed the same, with about a bikelength or so between riders.
Wiles, riding the Don's Kawasaki of Erin Kissinger, beat Shoemaker into turn one in the Open A contest, followed by Mike Poe, John Long and Joe Gathercole. For the first two laps, they ran side by side, with Shoemaker trying hard to make the outside work. While Shoemaker stayed close, Long took third going into turn one on the sixth lap. Shoemaker tired a banzai move off the final turn but came up just short.
The Open Sportsman contest had Jake Shoemaker (55A, above) leading Evan Baer (64A), Wood, Wiles and Long. Long bobbled and dropped back, with Jason Isennock moving into fifth. Wiles got by Wood down the back straight on the third lap, but the front two used their knowledge of this track and stayed several lengths in front of Wiles.
With Colton Smith on a 450 on this day, the win in the small 125 class went to Chris Kirkner, while Smith scored both the 250 B and 250 Sportsman-class wins. Samantha Bergman led Jason Nuss, Smith, Kevin Bills and Matt Trout at the start of the B final. Smith was on the move on the Triple J Stables Kawasaki, taking second off turn four on the opening lap, and then the lead going into turn one right afterward. Nuss took second on the fourth lap, but Bergman retook it on the seventh lap.
The 250 Sportsman final was also close. Roy Miller (56, above) took the lead from Bergman, Nuss, Colton Smith (32) and Trout. Bergman and Smith were close to Miller in the early laps, with Smith using an outside pass to take the lead off turn four on the fifth lap. Bergman pressured Miller throughout the closing laps, while Rich Mellinger nipped Nuss at the line for fourth.
Dave Smith (77, above) was first off turn two in the Over 30 final, with Miller, Rick Winsett (11), Albert Cook and Mellinger behind. Winsett was in second by the end of the first lap, and he swapped the lead several times with Smith until Winsett took control of first on the sixth lap. Mellinger took fourth on the third lap.
Brett Friedel led Mike Mester, Ray Jenkins, Jim Chapman and Smith as the Over 40 pack exited turn two. Mester took the lead on the back stretch on lap two, with Jenkins taking second by turn three. Smith got third entering turn three on the sixth lap.
Mester also topped the Over 50 class, taking the lead on the second lap from Chapman.
Cameron Smith (15, above) grabbed the 85 lead from Dalton Gauthier (1), Tristan Avery and Ken Kolsovsky. The front trio ran nose to tail for the entire distance until the final turn, when they came upon a lapper. Smith tried to go to the outside, which was the wrong move, as Gauthier and Avery both slipped under to snare the win from Smith.
