CAMBRIDGE, MN
Minnesota District 23's Pro contender Josh Koch (National number 68, above) and Wisconsin District 16's Pro-class luminary Brock Schwarzenbacher (National number 30) traded hotly contested wins during the double-district dirt-track race held at the Isanti County fairgrounds, hosted by On Track Promotions. Some 190 entrants from both districts geared up for this unique doubleheader event. The Norseman Motorcycle Club would host the second event at its Tourist Trophy clubgrounds on Sunday afternoon.
The race fans certainly got more bang for their buck, as Schwarzenbacher and Koch repeatedly traded the lead in aggressive fashion throughout the 450 Pro main event. Schwarzenbacher eventually edged Koch for the win. Rounding out the top five were Elizabeth, Colorado's Davey Durelle, and District 23's Conner Anderson and Rich Delak.
The Open Pro final was looking to be more of the same, as Schwarzenbacher grabbed the holeshot and held the lead until Koch tucked his Jeff's SOS/Anderson Plumbing/General Engineering/Durelle Racing Products Honda to the inside of him in turn one on the next lap. Although Koch held the lead throughout the 15-lap main event, he was stalked closely by Schwarzenbacher. Meanwhile, Conner Anderson and his younger brother Cole were running a solid third and fourth, ahead of multiple-time 750cc Pro Motorcycle Pikes Peak Hillclimb champion Durelle. The top five would finish in that order, after Schwarzenbacher's final-turn pass attempt on race leader Koch missed by inches.
"I hate losing," said the Mack Daddy Racing/Moose/Bell Helmets/Kal-Gard-sponsored Schwarzenbacher. "Last year I won all four of my heats on both days but never won a main; I was really bummed. At least I got one win so far."
"Brock and I have had a rivalry ever since he came over here and beat me on a 60cc," Koch recounted. "I made some changes after the 450 race and got it hooking up a bit better, but it started getting slick towards the end of the race."
District 16's Dave Schultz from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, scored a pair of wins, in the 450 A and Open A classes. His win in the 450 A class came when early race leader Zack Zemanovic bobbled in turn one, allowing Schultz to catch up and make the pass. Zemanovic was then followed to the checkers by a fleet of District 23 contenders that included Wayne Lindberg, Cale Langland, Steve Bystrom and Erick Bostrom.
Dave Schultz (70, above) scored win number two in the Open A class, ahead of District 23's Dustin Paul (11), who turned in a promising performance aboard a Honda 450 four-stroke for the very first time. D23's Cole Anderson and D16's Alexia Hoffman (38) and Zemanovic rounded out the top five.
