HARRINGTON, DE
Local riders earned top honors at the Delaware Dirt Track Association's track in Harrington in the latest round of Delaware Short Track racing, held on the smooth one-tenth-mile clay oval.
With a NASCAR event in Dover just 20 minutes away, the turnout was light, but those who came out saw some great racing. In the 65cc class, newcomer Quay Miller of Newark captured the win on his Honda.
In Open B competition, Milford, Delaware's D.J. Johnson, riding the Johnson Brothers Honda, took the early lead in the heat race. On lap five, Suzuki-mounted Jeff Webb (4, above), also of Milford, made a desperate pass to capture the pole for the final.
When the green light flashed to start the main event, Johnson again took the early lead. Following Webb in the lead pack were Wilmington, Delaware's Dan Dougherty, and Harrington's own Harold Schaffer. As Schaffer and Dougherty traded places, Webb passed Johnson for the lead, and then he held on to earn his second win in as many weeks. Dougherty got by Schaffer and held on to round out the top three.
"The track was nice but got a little dry at the end," Webb recounted. "I want to thank Hertrich Toyota and Shawnee Scooters of Milford, Delaware, for their support."
In the Open A class, Milford's Mark Miller (2, above) piloted the Monster Energy-backed Honda to the win in both the heat and the final.
