DELTA, PA
On a chilly, very windy evening, members of the Mullen family scored wins at the Baltimore County Trail Riders' launching of their 2010 Mid-Atlantic Short Track Series at the Mason Dixon Fairgrounds in Delta, Pennsylvania. National number 71, Don Mullen (above), led the way with his three-for-four evening. His brother, Ace Phillips, topped the Over 30 class, and their dad, Don Mullen Sr., took the Over 50 victory.
After breaking his primary bike the previous week, Don Mullen used his backup machine to maintain his mastery of the small fairgrounds track. In both the Open A and 450 Sportsman finals, he was clear of the field entering turn one and worked his margin to about 10 yards on his Miller Motorsports-sponsored Honda. Jason Isennock ran second in both races. Cory Strickler, Steve Lerch and Jake Shoemaker followed in the Open A contest; Shoemaker worked his way to fourth by the fifth lap and stayed close to Strickler until the finish.
The 450 Sportsman clash was similar, except that Shoemaker gated third, in front of Strickler, and those positions stayed the same.
Don Mullen had to work for his other win, in the Adult 150 class. He started in second, behind Albert Cook, and with Cody Bauer and Melissa Hildebrand behind him. Mullen took the lead off turn four on the third lap. Meanwhile, Samantha Bergman began cutting her way forward, taking third by the sixth lap and pressuring Cook to the end.
Isennock and Don Mullen put on a pass/repass show in the Open Twin/Vintage heat and the first half of the final until Mullen stalled in turn two, giving Isennock the win.
The other wins were wire-to-wire affairs, with Ace Phillips (18, above) heading Rich Mellinger (86), Dillon Cava and Albert Cook for the Over 30 victory, and Don Mullen Sr. taking the Over 50 lead from Richard Foard, Cliff Diem and Ronnie Pfahler; Foard stayed close most of the distance.
Colton Smith (1, above) and Joey Alexander (14) staged some bumping action in the 250 B and 250 Sportsman finals. Alexander took the B lead from Smith, Becca Zafia and Darren Phillips. Alexander and Smith quickly gapped the others. On the sixth lap, Smith dived under entering turn three for the lead and the win.
Smith led Alexander. Mellinger and Phillips at the start of the Sportsman final. As they fought closely for the lead, Smith fell in turn three on the third lap. On the following lap, Alexander drifted high, and Mellinger took the lead. Alexander retook the lead down the back straight on the seventh lap.
After dominating most of the 125 finals this season, Smith had an off night, as he slid out on the opening lap of the final, giving the lead to Matt Trout, with Sean Simmons and Joe Dragunas following. Simmons had trouble staying upright while the rest of the field spread out.
After easy wins in the 50 Shaft-Drive contest by Nicholas Crone (27, right) and the 50 Chain-Drive contest by Jacob Gast (3), the two tangled in the 50 Senior clash. They quickly put some distance on the others, with Crone in front and Gast close behind. Several times, Gast would briefly lead off the turns, only to have Crone retake the point by the next turn. At the flag, Crone led by a foot.
