SPRING RUN, PA
Roy Miller (56, above) scored a pair of wins at what may have been the final motorcycle race at Path Valley Speedway, topping the 250 Sportsman class and using the same machine to best Ken Yoder (above, behind Miller) in the Over 30 final. In the 250 Sportsman event, he put the Roy Built Suzuki two-stroke in front of Tyler Phillips and Joe Gathercole at the start and maintained about a three-bikelength margin the entire distance.
The surprise was the Over 30 win. On a track that does require some horsepower, but on which hitting your marks is a little more important, Miller jumped in front of Yoder, Todd Kendig and Oliver Jones. He kept the screaming two-stroke out in front, and Yoder could not find a line around.
The 250 and Open B classes had good battles between the same trio of riders. In the 250 B class, Ryan Connelly took the lead, ahead of Tyler Phillips and Tyler Stacey. Stacey slid out in turn three on the third lap and finally rejoined two laps down. Phillips put the WD Dump Truck/Phillips Racing/Don's Kawasaki KXF into the lead off turn four on the fourth lap and held on for the win. In the Open contest, Connelly had the Spa and Pool Place/Lancaster Harley-Davidson KXF in front of Stacey, Phillips and Curtis Fisk. After a few laps, they settled in, with equal spaces between everyone.
Jeff Hughes (33, above) finally managed to hold on to an early lead for his first win in the 125 class. Over the last couple of months, he has managed to lead out of turn two, only to fall prey to another rider who built up speed during the event. Hughes led Shain Bourassa, Cameron Smith (on the only 150 Air-Cooled machine entered), Joe Jurgens and Mike Peter. By halfway, everyone had a 10-foot margin on the next rider back. Coming off the fourth turn on the seventh lap, Bourassa got into a tank-slapper and slid into the rail. Smith tried to avoid him but hit him and crashed. Bourassa was transported to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion a some fractured ribs.
A bad start doomed 65cc heat winner Nathan Reichert (16, above) in the final, as Colin Cunningham (29A) nailed the start, with Reichert, John Winsett III and Tyree Moore following. Once under way, Reichert cut into Cunningham's margin, finishing right behind him at the line.
After having reliability problems with his Suzuki, Ken Kolsovsky (67) showed up with a "new" (for him) Yamaha and held off Cameron Smith, Reichert and Cunningham for the 85 (7-11) win.
Several riders scored doubles on the afternoon: Racer Stacey (95, above) celebrated his birthday with a pair of 50cc wins over Robert Wheatley in the Shaft Drive and Chain Drive classes, and Jim Chapman topped Mike Keane in the Over 50 and 500 Two-Valve finals.
Mike Poe fought his way past Yoder and Dalton Winkler for the Open A win, taking the lead off turn two on the third lap. After racing side by side with Winkler for three laps in the Open Sportsman class, Poe pulled away for the win.
Track owner John Winsett also scored a rare double, battling Todd Kendig for a close Over 40 win and then winning the Quad Sportsman final.
