Hersh Hits Holeshot and Holds On!

SHIPPENSBURG, PA

Grabbing the holeshot at the beginning of the 25-lap 10th annual Paul Crumling Memorial Race, Derek Hersh (8, below) held off Dalton Winkler (35) the entire distance.Derek Hersh 8 vs Dalton Winkler 35 at Paul Crumling Memorial 2009 0906

This race is named for the founder of Pro Plates number plates, Paul Crumling, who died of a rare blood disease one week after competing here at Shippensburg Speedway 11 years ago. The race is open to any rider on a bike 125cc or larger, and who has never held a pro license. Among the previous winners are Jared Mees, Brian Phillips and John Lewis.

It took five heats and a semi to determine the lineup for the Memorial Race. Hersh led Winkler, Travis Diem, Rich Heverly and Haden Avery out of turn two. Heverly got under Diem off four on the second lap. The top five were set, and the field started to spread out - except at the front, where Winkler stayed right behind Hersh's Don's Kawasaki/Lancaster Harley-Davidson-sponsored Kawasaki the entire distance, looking for an opening. On the "podium," it was Derek Hersh (below, left), Dalton Winkler (35) and Rich Heverly (42A).Derek Hersh 8 Dalton Winkler 35 Rich Heverly 42A at Paul Crumling Memorial 2009 0906

A companion Memorial race was also held for 150 Air-Cooled machines. Colton Smith grabbed the lead from Albert Cook, Cameron Smith and Tristan Avery. Cameron took second entering turn three on the third lap, with Avery taking third a little later. Avery moved into second going into turn three on the fifth lap and started closing on Colton. At the line, Avery was right on Smith's rear tire.Colton Smith 41 at Paul Crumling Memorial 2009 0906

Earlier, Colton Smith (41, above) destroyed the 125 final, though there was a good battle for second way behind him among Jeff Hughes, Shain Bourassa and Matt Trout, who was returning after breaking his wrist back in July. Trout took second off turn two on lap two, while Bourassa got by Hughes for third on lap four.

In the regular program, previous Crumling winner Evan Baer scored a pair of wins in the 450 Stock Frame and Open A classes. He had an easy time winning the Stock Frame, over Ace Phillips and Travis Diem. The Open A contest, however, was a battle, as Winkler led Hersh, Baer, Mike Standiford and Heverly. Baer took third entering turn three on the third lap and then put the Baer Racing Products/Don's Kawasaki Kawasaki into the lead at the same spot on the sixth lap.

Roy Miller led Phillips, Rick Winsett and Todd Kendig at the start of the Over 30 contest. Phillips used the outside line to get by Miller off the fourth turn on the fifth lap.

Winsett made up for losing the Over 30 class by nailing the start of the Open Sportsman contest, over Jesse Long, Winkler and Baer. Baer started moving, taking third off turn two on the third lap and second going into turn one on the following lap. Winkler moved into third at about the same time.Joe Bromley 5 vs Dan Bromley 54 at Paul Crumling Memorial 2009 0906

Joe Bromley (5, above) scored a pair of wire-to-wire wins in the 250 and Open B finals. In the 250 final, he took the lead from is younger brother Dan Bromley (54), Jeremiah Snow and Ryan Connelly. The Bromleys put a little distance on the others, while Snow drifted high off turn four on the sixth lap, letting Connelly by for third.

The Open final saw Joe Bromley in front of Tyler Phillips, Connelly and Jeff McManus. The front four stayed close the entire distance, with no one making a mistake.

The Kolsovsky brothers each took a class win. Zack Kolsovsky battled with Nathan Reichert the entire distance in the 50 (7-8) contest after they got by early leader Trevor Williams on the opening lap. Zack won by 10 yards. Ken Kolsovsky (41X, below) borrowed Reichert's recently purchased 85 to win the 85 (7-11) final; he battled Avery while Cameron Smith and 65 winner Brandon Price battled for third a few yards back. Ken finally got some breathing room on the final lap when Avery drifted high off turn two.Ken Kolsovsky 41X at Paul Crumling Memorial 2009 0906
