Koch Rules Sandbox Arena Short Track

NEW RICHMOND, WIJosh Koch 68K at Sandbox Arena ST 2009 0829

Twenty-one-year-old Josh Koch (68K, above) piloted his Jeff's SOS/Anderson Plumbing/General Engineering/Durelle Racing Products-backed 450cc Honda to convincing victories in both the 450 and Open Semi-Pro divisions during the double district dirt-track event held at the Amsoil Sandbox Arena, located in New Richmond Wisconsin.

Although Koch's wins were relatively uneventful, his progress in the Pro class this season has had its ups and downs, to be sure.

"We had a good week in Daytona and made the main event at the Short Track National," explained Koch. "But I crashed at Peoria off the jump and banged myself up pretty good."

The good news is that Koch's efforts earned him a National number for 2010.

"I hope I get my number 68," said Koch, "but I'll be happy with any number they give me."

It took four restarts to get the crash-infested Open A main event under way, and after the dust settled, it was District 16's Dustin Paul scoring the win, just ahead of a hard-charging Dave Shultz from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

Paul returned for the 250 A final and seemed to doing a pretty good job of holding off Cole Anderson until they encountered lapped traffic. Paul got tangled with a lapper and went down, allowing Anderson to take the victory.

The 85cc class saw a classic come-from-behind charge from Wisconsin's first little lady of racing, Charlotte Kainz. She started out in the fourth position and methodically clawed her way into the lead by the halfway point. Fellow District 16 racers Andrew Schleicher and Jacob Jesko finished a close second and third, respectively.

The Vintage Twin main event became a shootout between District 16 heavyweights Dan Vrana and Terry Vestol. Vrana hounded Vestol aboard his Harley-Davidson until the final lap before making a pass that would stick. Vestol would return to secure victories in the Over 30 and Over 40 classes in convincing fashion.
