PORTLAND, OR
At round two of Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association action, held at Portland International Raceway on June 26 and 27, Alan Schmidt (1, above), rebounding from a subpar (for him) OMRRA season opener, won Formula Ultra and Open Supersport by a margin of at least 30 seconds over second place. Oliver Jervis (125), on an ex-Mike Sullivan ZX10, came as close as anyone to challenging him, in the early laps of Formula Ultra.
Now racing just one Suzuki (rather than three Suzukis, like he raced last year), Schmidt is still on track to win his seventh consecutive OMRRA number-one plate. OMRRA only counts points in two classes toward the season championship, and heavily populated classes such as Formula Ultra and Open Supersport score a lot of points.
The Anciens, Christopher and his daughter Mackenzie, were the hardware haulers for the weekend. Chris won the 600 Supersport, 750 Supersport, 600 Superbike and 750 Superbike classes. Mackenzie contributed with a second in Formula Two and a third in Formula Three on her new Moriwaki Honda. Maybe they could melt down some trophies and build a new motorcycle.
Both days saw beautiful weather, OMRRA racers having paid their dues in the June monsoon. Some good lap times were clicked off, but not quite getting to Schmidt's 1:06.36 over the 2-mile track that was set last year and is still the PIR motorcycle track record.
The Formula Female class didn't run, because only Christine Porter and Crystal Platt entered, and it takes three to have a class. FF stalwart Amy Jermain couldn't sign up because the class is for 600cc-plus machines and she was racing a borrowed SR500 Yamaha. Having made a questionable decision to sell her 600RR Honda and pursue a Master's degree and a career change, Jermain was without a racebike - and hating it. Offered a ride - any ride - she made the best of it, bringing herself and the SR back intact during two days of racing.
There's a big difference between 1:17s (on the 600RR) and 1:42s (on the SR500) at PIR.
"It was sure different, but I loved it," Jermain said. "In the corners, you have to pay just as much attention, but on the straights you can look around a little. Not much to see down the front straight, but on the back straight you get a great view of Mount Hood."
Mike Gray totaled his racebike early in 2009. This was his first 2010 OMRRA appearance, and he got a win in Open Classic Superbike. Gray has been keeping sharp as a Portland Super Sport Riders instructor. The PSSR instructors are busy teaching, but they also get a lot of track time at a good rate - i.e., free. Gray's win doesn't show up in the results because three of the five entries tallied a DNS. Gray, on a 1993 Ducati 750SS, got serious pressure from James Moody, on a 1998 Honda CBR900. Also, they were racing in a combined wave start, and there were lots of folks on the track to race with.
"I've got a new approach to this," Gray said. "Race when you're ready, don't when you're not, and do it for fun."
