Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association
Round 3: Portland International Raceway

Schmidt Wins Four at OMRRA

PORTLAND, OR

Alan Schmidt didn't win every class he entered in Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association's third race of the year, at Portland International Raceway. Schmidt had to settle for a second in 600 Supersport, and third in 600 Superbike. He did okay otherwise, though, with wins in the 750 Supersport, 750 Superbike, Formula Ultra and Open Supersport classes.

Unseasonably warm (in the mid- to high 80s) and humid weather caused tuning mysteries for the two-strokers and may have contributed to a rash of crashes, the worst of which was when Peter Lenz planted himself into a tire barrier and had to be carefully extricated, with several broken bones.

Speaking of crashes, Kevin Pinkstaff (21, below) absolutely wadded his Oliver Jervis-sponsored GSX-R750 in practice the day before, but he got back on the track anyway, hauling out the trusty old SV650, which had been honorably retired from racing at the end of the 2008 season.Kevin Pinkstaff 21 vs Mark Bothe at OMRRA 3

"My dad bought the SV as a streetbike, and I figured I should give it a test drive and make sure it's safe for him to ride; it seems fine," Pinkstaff said. "And I'm really glad I didn't crash it."

Pinkstaff used the SV for a second in Middleweight Superbike, with Mark Bothe (above, behind Pinkstaff) and Dustin Ranck in hot pursuit, and for a third in 450 Superbike, again behind Dave Salmi, with Cedric Smith taking first.

The OMRRA corner-worker crew, who collectively know what's going on everywhere on the racetrack, unanimously picked the battles between Eirik Nielsen and Jeff Lavallee in 250 and 500 Vintage contests as the best racing of the day. On each of the 24 laps of their two races, Lavallee would pass Nielsen between turns four and five, and Nielsen would get him back going into turn nine - and since the finish line is between turns nine and one, Nielsen claimed the day.

Amy Germaine, the fastest of a small but devoted gang of Northwest female racers, rode to a first and a third in her two 600 Senior classes. The only difference between the Senior classes and the rest is that the bike must be 5 years old. A 2003 Honda CB600RR is a pretty fast bike; plus, Germaine benefited from uncharacteristic DNFs by Travis Ohge and Urban Moore in the 600 Superbike Senior clash.

Devon McDonough, who isn't nearly old enough for a driver's license, put his OMRRA Expert license to good use, taking wins in both Formula Two and Three on the same sharply tuned RS125.
