Dwyer Breaks Record at PBIR

JUPITER, FLSean Dwyer 4 at CCS Florida 2009 0823

Sean Dwyer (4, above, leading Michael Barnes and Kyle Keesee) set a new lap record at Palm Beach International Raceway during the Unlimited Grand Prix race on his GSX-R 1000. He ran the fastest lap about halfway through the race and broke the record previously set by Robertino Pietri. Dwyer's lap time of 1:16.699 is the new record to beat and one-and-one-half-tenths of a second faster that the prior time set just five months ago on the newly redesigned road course.

Dwyer nailed the holeshot of the Unlimited Grand Prix from his first-row grid position and never looked back from there. Behind him, Michael Barnes maneuvered his GSX-R1000 into second place and set his sights on the leader, pushing him faster and faster, but never quite catching up. Behind them, in the battle for third place, Jeff Lampe pulled his ZX-10 around the GSX-R1000 ridden by Lars Remsen on the final lap to make the podium. At the finish line, it was Dwyer, Barnes, Lampe, Remsen, and Willy Del Valle.

On the podium, Barnes complimented Dwyer.

"He rode great, and it's a pleasure to come out here and chase somebody on my home track, even though it's a little reconfigured - but I'm having a blast out here!" Barnes said, adding to Dwyer, "What a great ride. I wish we could have diced a little bit more. It was a pleasure riding with you."

"That was awesome!" Dwyer stated. "That felt so good. It has to mean the most of any battle. I had been talking smack all day about somebody breaking the track record, so I was like, 'You'd better get your game together now.' And I just put my head down that lap, and that was it. So that was awesome! I was feeling the pressure and just rode. That was killer!"

Dwyer had also won the GTO and Unlimited Superbike classes earlier in the day. From the podium, he thanked his wife, Daniella; Tax Defense Network; GMD Computrack; Dunlop; and former racer Mike Rouleau for building the engine on, in his words, his "absolute missile."

Kevin Mendez was the weekend's biggest Expert winner, taking home four first-place trophies in the Expert Lightweight classes. Mendez won the GT Lights, Lightweight Formula 40, Lightweight Superbike, and Lightweight Supersport classes. Mendez is sponsored by KRM Radiology, DKM Skin Products, Motocourse Performance, Shiftech and Pirelli

Daniel Guevara swept through the Amateur ranks with seven victories and ended up the weekend's biggest winner overall. Guevara won the Amateur GTO, GTU Middleweight Supersport, Unlimited Superbike, Middleweight Superbike, Heavyweight Superbike and Middleweight Grand Prix races. He is sponsored by Virtual 3D Inc., Dunlop, Prieto Performance, GMD Computrack and VP Fuels.
