PORTLAND, OR
Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association's final weekend at Portland International Raceway was a doubleheader, with both Saturday and Sunday being full race days. The top three racers in each of 21 classes on both days were familiar, but the results had a few big differences.
Most notable was the finishing order in 600 Supersport and Superbike, as Alan Schmidt (1, right) won on Saturday, but Oliver Jervis (125) prevailed on Sunday, with all four races providing the best racing of the weekend.
"There were at least two passes on each lap," Jervis said. "The biggest difference was that on Saturday, Alan handled the lapped riders better than I did. And Sunday, I finished in front!"
Jervis also collected a cool grand in Middleweight Superbike, the winner's portion of the purse sponsored by the Yoast family and friends, in memoriam of Todd Yoast. Todd, who owned the highly competitive Middleweight Superbike class in the 1980s and '90s, passed away last fall.
Jervis also delighted a bunch of racers and pit crews by cruising around the pits with the diminutive Virginia Pinkstaff perched merrily behind him on the Zlock Racing pit bike. Virginia, the doyenne of the racing Pinkstaff family, is Kevin's and Brian's grandmother, and their biggest fan and lifetime supporter in all they've achieved.
Alan Schmidt accomplished his goal of repeating his claim on OMRRA's number-one plate for a record sixth consecutive year, finally eclipsing the previous record of five, set by Shawn Roberti in the 1990s.
"Next year, I'm backing down a bit; I'll just race one bike in two classes," said Schmidt, who has been racing three Suzukis in six classes.
Another racer of note announced his retirement after 39 years. Mike Sullivan will continue to run his racing school but will no longer go racing.
"I think 39 years is enough, and I've got some physical issues," said Sullivan; always a gentleman, and always a strong competitor, he will be missed.
Three female racers made the podium on Sunday: Mackenzie Ancien in Formula Three, bouncing back from a crash and a DNF on Saturday; Amy Jermain in the 600 and 750 Senior contests, finally healing up from a broken wrist suffered three races previous; and Crystal Platt, with a second in the very fast Open Twins Supersport class, in only her third event at PIR.
OMRRA workers and officials can now relax briefly before gearing up for the next terrifying ordeal - the awards banquet, a.k.a. the Road Rash Bash, on November 14 at the Hawthorne Theater. This will prompt another "race" report, with incriminating photos and a listing of 2009 season standings.
