AIRWAY HEIGHTS, WAThe Mini MX Summer Grand National — "The Richest Pit-Bike Race in History" — featured intense racing and some epic battles. Riders from all around the country descended on Extreme Motosports MX Park in Airway Heights, Washington, for a weekend of great racing. The event included a $40,000 Privateer MX National for 250 and 450 classes and the Mini MX Summer Grand National, which featured the best mini racers in the country battling for a record-breaking $20,000 Pro purse and Redline/BBR BMX bicycle trophies.
The race drew participants from all over the Northwest as well as California, Nevada, Utah, Michigan and Nebraska. The weather was perfect — sunny skies, a light breeze — and the track was well groomed and fast.
BBR/Monster Energy rider Derek Costella (1) took the top honors with a flawless performance in the 16-inch Pro race, going 1-1, and he also won the 10-inch Pro overall with 1-2 finishes. A spectacular crash took him out of contention in the 12-inch Pro class when he lost control of his machine while jumping the over/under section of the track on lap one.
Costella's teammate Ryan Abrigo (103) showed the world that he is the man to beat in outdoor minibike racing by winning three out of four motos in the 10-inch and 12-inch Pro classes. Abrigo was leading the first moto of the 10-inch Pro race a when a broken throttle suddenly erased his chances of going four for four on the day.
"The track was technical in sections and super fast in others," Abrigo noted. "There were some pretty big tabletops and a huge over/under section that made this a perfect place for an outdoor mini race. I felt really good out there and am super happy with my results."
Pitster Pro's Brad Ripple was "Mr. Consistency," with solid second-place-overall finishes in both the 10-inch and 12-inch Pro classes. At the end of the day, a select group of riders walked away from Mini MX Summer Grand National with their shares of the largest minibike Pro purse in history.
