MRANN Moose Racing Spring Series
Round 5: Corey Herring Memorial Race at Honey Lake Motocross Park

Neely Runs Away at Herring Memorial

MILFORD, CA

This year's MRANN Spring Series ended with the inaugural Corey Herring Memorial Race, honoring the young rider who lost his life a year ago. After a pre-race ceremony early Sunday, the American flag was flown at half-staff in his memory.

The race was staged at the technical Honey Lake Motocross Park in Milford, California, and a European Scrambles format was used. Riders were challenged by the same course the WORCS series used when it visited the track earlier this year. Each class rode a separate, two-hour long race, and the short course had leaders lapping riders after only a couple of circuits.2010 0619 Honey Lake MRANN Ross Neely 311N

Ross Neely (311N, above) from Chester, California, was the class of the Expert field, as he got the holeshot and stormed to victory. He finished with a time of 2:02:48. Second-place rider Seth Johnson came home just over a minute behind.

"I loved the course, as there were some jumps out there, some ravines, waterfalls, and it was watered, so that was pretty nice," Neely said after taking the checkered flag. "There were some pretty cool jumps, and I like those, as I can launch off them and get some rest. And I also need to thank RMS, WR-1, Buffalo Chips, my parents and pit crew."

The Novice event was next, and it took a couple of lead changes before eventual winner Darian Gentile, a 16-year-old from Gardnerville, Nevada, made the winning pass.

"I was passing a lot of people, never got passed, and I've never ridden Honey Lake before," Gentile said. "And there were lots of places to pass, so you've just got to be creative and get around the lappers."

The day ended with the Amateurs having their shot at the course. That event saw the closest finish of the day, when Daemon Pecoraro bested Steve Walkiewicz by a scant 40 seconds.

"I got a pretty good start, inside the top 10," Pecoraro said. "It was my style of track - really rough - and I just tried to pull through with it. And I need to thank my mom, dad, and McCoy's Off-Road Center."

Two riders having a very good day were Josh Morros and Chrystal Ponsock. Morros, coming back from serious injuries, was second in the Expert event until a flat tire dropped him to 35th overall.

"I felt really good," Morris said. "My endurance still isn't fully back, but it'll come back sooner or later."

Ponsock scored a double when she won Saturday's V Women's Expert class and then the Sunday W Women's Novice class.

While several riders crashed, only young Sage Parkhurst got a helicopter ride to the trauma center in Reno, Nevada. Fortunately, according to her stepfather, besides being sore, she only suffered a concussion.

There was a new class added for Saturday, and Brad Bolton bested Cliff Townsend for the honor of winning the very first Vintage/Bomber event.
