HALLETTSVILLE, TX
TORCS found a new venue for 2010: Abbott Ranch. The sandy place was a challenge in itself, swallowing up riders and showing who was strongest at the end.
In the 85cc B class, Honda rider Colton Rothhammer put down a hard second lap to pull a lead on the rest of the field. Following him on the first lap was Wilderness Kawasaki rider Dillon Schuette, until TJ's Cycle KTM rider Colton Preece made a pass on lap two and then put a gap on Schuette. On that same lap, Yamaha rider Dillon Battaglia also got by Schuette to take the last spot on the podium.
In 50cc (7-8) action, MSR/KTM-backed Drex Wilson (3P, left) ran away from the field, putting a one-minute lead on the rest of the class by the end.
In the 50cc (4-6) class, Garrison Clopton (24, below right) took his third win of the year on his KTM.
Double-class winners on the weekend included Motorcycle Parts LTD/Yamaha pilot Jordan Brown, who must have liked the sand, as he took wins in both the 250F B and Sportsman (13-29) B classes in convincing fashion.
Wild West KTM rider Dan Sell took the wins in the Open A and Over 40 A classes. KTM pilot Kacy Machann won both the Women's A and Women's Open classes. KTM rider Riley Johnson topped the 65cc B and 50cc Open classes. Pro-Action Yamaha pilot Robert Mumford scored victories in the 250F C and Over 30 C classes. And Rothhammer also took the win in the Supermini class, to add to his 85cc B victory.
The Pro 1 contest started off funny. Pro-Action rider Brian Johnson (42, left) got the holeshot on his KTM, only to have his chain derail three corners later. Moose/Pirelli-sponsored Craig Chedsey took the lead quickly and ran with it. Behind him was new-to-the-Pro-class Michael Giboney, who held down the second spot until Johnson re-installed his chain and charged back to take the second spot. By then, Chedsey had a large one-minute gap and cruised to the finish, taking his first win of the season in the Pro 1 class.
The Pro main event was interesting. Brad Kammer (5, below) got the holeshot, followed closely by Shawn O'Leary (81). Answer/Yamaha rider Martin Howell worked his way through the field from a fifth-place start and took the win by five minutes, taking home the $500 Torcsracing.com Pro purse. Shift/Kawasaki rider Tracy Cloy kept Howell honest for a couple of laps, but his clutch cable broke with two laps to go, and Cloy limped the bike in to take the second spot on the podium. The big battle was for the last spot on the podium. Motorcycle Parts LTD/Race Tech-backed Yamaha rider Nathan Goertz had a knock-down, drag-out battle all day with the KTM-mounted O'Leary. These two raced all the way to the finish, posting their fastest lap on the eighth and final lap. O'Leary edged out Goertz by only three seconds at the finish.
The next round will be held at Pierce Ranch, which is a great place to race, so please visit www.torcsracing.com for more info.
