PAIGE, TX
Round one of 2010 TORCS action started off with a bang at Cross Creek Cycle Park on January 23 and 24. The weekend featured great weather, with temperatures in the 60s and the sun shining. The track had great moisture and flow, with only a couple of mudholes, which made for great spectating.
Saturday saw some new faces at the top of the podium in the Open A class. D.L. Wood had a great ride, building a lead on Wild West KTM rider Dan Sell early in the race and holding it to the end.
In 250F A competition, Central Texas Powersports' Jordan McKinney and TJ's KTM/Maineroot.com rider Ian Brown traded places a number of times. McKinney started off with the lead and held it for three laps, until Brown made the pass in the muddy creek section. The very next lap, McKinney took it back, forcing Brown to make the pass on the final lap. Brown then extended his lead to 25 seconds.
Three classes on Saturday had a lot of riders, making the racing fierce. One was the 450F C class. Mike Dickey took the win, followed by Tony Palacios and Shawn Preece.
In 250F C action, Pro-Action rider Robert Mumford took his first-ever win. Following him in second was newcomer Austin Morgan, fresh from the 85cc classes. The third spot was filled by Hunter Ewing, who'd had the early lead.
In the Open C class, Tejas Motorsports rider Lee Jordan flat out ran away with it, followed by Stu's Custom Metal owner Stu Harris. Preston Foose filled out the podium.
In the Mini ranks, Riley Johnson edged out fellow MSR rider Jeremy Hamilton in the last corner of the last lap for the 50cc (7-8) win. These two had a great battle the entire race. On Sunday, in the 50 Open clash, Hamilton got the better end of the deal, winning the race. Following him was Drex Wilson in second and Johnson in third.
The Pro class started the year off with 16 riders going at it. SMS Racing/Moose rider Cole Kirkpatrick (29, above) set the bar high. Caleb Ramsey got out front early, but a flat front tire bit him on lap seven. Austin Boney was running second but pulled out on lap four. Jason Doyle started the first lap in seventh, but as the race went on he moved his way forward lap by lap, up to second spot. At one point, Doyle looked like the only rider who could keep Kirkpatrick close, but on lap seven Kirkpatrick had a big lead, and he stretched it out by more than a minute. On the podium, Cole Kirkpatrick (below, center) took the top step, Jason Doyle (left) was runner-up, and Cameron Kirkpatrick (below, right) was third after fighting off a lot of other hungry riders.
The next race is at Abbott Ranch - a brand-new property - in Hallettsville, Texas, February 13-14.
