BONITA, TX
Round four of Tucker Rocky/MSR/Answer/Pro Taper-sponsored Texas Off-road Racing Organization action was held in Bonita, Texas - a property known for its treacherously deep sand. With uncommonly cold weather the week leading up to the event and temperatures in the teens the weekend of the race, the entire 13.5-mile course was frozen! It was the first time in TORO's nine years this had happened, and it made for hard-packed, faster-than-normal racing on a usually very technical sand-whoop track.
In Sunday's Pro action, Cycletown South/KTM/MSR-sponsored Haydn Franklin got a good jump on the light.
"I got another good start and pulled the lead early and stayed focused," Franklin said. "On a fast straight, I could hear the four-stroke of Caleb Ramsay behind me; I knew it was him - I know how he rides, and he was coming fast! At the end of the straight, he passed. Then his bike ceased - he was out."
The first lap saw Franklin with almost a minute lead over Cameron Kirkpatrick and Cameron Ishmael. Cole Kirkpatrick was sitting back in fourth place, a minute and 18 seconds off the lead.
"I was riding really smooth and really didn't feel that fast," Franklin said. "I knew Cole would be hunting for me, so I just held pace and continued to push."
With at least a minute lead over everyone after lap two, Franklin was on fire. The order was still Franklin, Cameron Kirkpatrick, Ishmael and Cole Kirkpatrick.
At the start of the third lap, and after a perfect pit, Franklin began to conserve energy. Cole passed Ishmael and then his brother Cameron to move into second place, behind Franklin, and less than a minute behind at the start of lap four. Cameron developed a painful blister on his hand and pulled off the track at that point. Franklin kept a conservative pace while listening for Cole.
"I knew he would be gaining, but I still had plenty left if it came to that," said, Franklin. "It has been a long time since I've had a straight-up win over Cole, so I was feeling it!"
Cole Kirkpatrick was able to close to within 11 seconds of Franklin at the finish, with Ishmael, Brian Storrie and Troy Sanford rounding out the top five.
"My 2010 KTM 250XC from Cycletown South couldn't have been better," Franklin said. "It just feels real good with me, and the win feels great!"
With three rounds to go, Franklin has expanded his lead to 11 point over his competition for the series title.
In Ladies Pro action, House of Horsepower/Baker Boys of OKC/Scott USA-sponsored Kerrie Swartz took the lead early and had smooth sailing to a very convincing first win of her Pro career. Ashley Crouch, Hannah Otto and Danielle Mulkey followed, in that order.
