MRANN - Moose Racing Series
Round 9: Mother Chucker 100

Berryman Storms at Purgatory

NORTHERN WASHOE COUNTY, NV

Purgatory Peak stands at the north end of Winnemucca Dry Lake, about 100 miles northeast of Reno. The current round of MRANN's fall series was based in a valley near there, and the course offered a bit of something for just about any rider.Sean Berryman 243X at Mother Chucker 100 2009 0927

When the dust settled, veteran racer Sean Berryman (243X) had scored the victory, but it took two hard-charging loops to do it.

"I don't hang it out on the start as I used to when I was a kid and it got me into a lot of trouble," Berryman said. "I just got out there, held my own pace and kept caching guys. Luckily, as soon as I caught them, they'd fall over."

For one rider, the start was a bit dramatic, as he went over the handlebars but was able to get up and continue. Up front, Cory Vannoy was on point, while Berryman was working his way through the traffic. Several miles into the course, Berryman caught Vannoy, and the chase was on - that is, until Vannoy blew a stop check and fell to second.

From that point on, it was Berryman's race, and he ripped through the course and finished with a winning margin of just over four minutes.

After the dust settled, Berryman thanked his parents, and the guys from Yerington that help care for his bike, as well as Carson Motor Sports, DirtTricks.com, and his hard-working pit crew.

Vannoy had to settle for second, followed by Zakk Audenreid, Kyle Fenner and Washoe County assessor Josh Wilson, who won the Over 30 Expert Division.

Jason Thorne, who finished ninth overall, was the first Amateur to finish both loops.

"When we got to the ribbons at the start, then I was second going up the ravine here," Thorne said. "The course was whooped out, but it was awesome! I like the longer loops and the rock section on top of the mountain."

On Saturday, the Pee Wee riders, Minibike riders and Women riders got their chance on a short course. Drew Chattin won the Minibike overall, while Ezra Belingheri, Benjamin Niles and Riley Harvey won their respective Pee Wee divisions.

Several races had Le Mans-style starts, in which the riders had to run to their bikes, kick them into life, and take off. And Saturday's Women's race had a very interesting beginning. Riding in her first race after serving five years in the Marine Corps, Katie Rosenquist took off and tripped. Picking herself up, she then bump-started her bike, got the holeshot, and led the field up the hill at the start of the course.

In the end, Spanish Springs High School senior Jenelle Chattin claimed another overall victory. Further back, Rosenquist, now a freshman at UNR, won the Novice class in her first-ever race.
