PALMDALE, CA
Land-lease issues are forcing the closing of Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale. After serving the high desert for the past 25 years, this night's race was the last Saturday night race. A good turnout of riders made the final California Racing Club evening program a memorable one. Craig Tomlinson (323, left) made some memories of his own, as he went home with the first-place money in both the 250 and 450 Pro classes.
Live Dirty-backed Kevin Bey emerged with the 450 Pro first-moto holeshot to lead Tomlinson, Dustin Pulliam and Garrett Morrison. Bey had his Kawasaki running out front for a couple of laps before he stalled it in a corner and dropped back to fourth place. Tomlinson inherited the front spot, where he would stay for the remainder of the moto. Pulliam was runner-up, over Morrison and Bey.
The second moto was a Tomlinson benefit, as he led from start to finish on his AXO-backed Honda, leaving everyone else to fight over second place. Pulliam held down the runner-up spot for the first couple of circuits before being joined by Morrison, Bey and KX500-mounted Shane Smith. Morrison dropped Pulliam back to third before he, too, was pushed back to third by Bey, who ended up holding off both Morrison and Pulliam at the finish to take home the second-place money. Morrison's 3-3 tally edged out the 2-4 score of Pulliam for third, with Smith going 6-5 to round out the top five.
Tomlinson returned to handily win both 250 Pro motos with comfortable leads. Brandon Gillespie used a 2-3 tally aboard his O'Neal/FMF/TRE-sponsored Honda to claim the second-place payback, over Zach Word and Darin Chisholm.
Anthony Barbacovi set the pace out front in the opening 450 Intermediate contest for the first three laps before Matthew Hendrix got around him for the win. Brandon Doll worked his way up into a third-place finish, ahead of Taylor Lamson and Brian Powell.
Barbacovi had his O'Neal/661/VP Fuels-backed YZ450F in the point position for the first half of moto two until Doll found a way around him. Hendrix overcame a poor start to drop Barbacovi back to third place on the penultimate lap, which was good enough to claim the overall in the final standings. Doll's 3-1 finishes topped the 2-3 tally of Barbacovi for second, with Powell going 5-4 to edge out the 4-5 score of Lamson for fourth.
Brendan McConnachie (34, above) led every inch of the first 450 Novice moto. Ryan Moscrop (424) climbed up into a second-place finish, over Dominic Parrillo, Dalton Zahrt and Bryan Mullin.
Moto two was all Moscrop's, and he took the overall honors on a 2-1 showing. Parrillo kept Moscrop in his sights but couldn't quite mount a challenge and would have to settle for a second-place trophy via his 3-2 effort. Zahrt finished third in the moto for third in the standings, over Thomas Spalliero (6-4) and Chip Nygaard (7-5).
Jeff Willoh (216, above) pretty much grew up at LACR, and it was only fitting that the National-caliber rider finished off the final night race with a resounding win in the Vet Pro field aboard his SRE Racing-backed Kawasaki. Second-place money was earned by Bill Sauro (311) via a 4-2 score, who was followed by Cameron Doll (345), who went 3-3, Jon Zahrt (2-5) and Randy Rhinehart (5-6).
