Vet X kick-started its summer series back into action at Cahuilla Creek MX after a six-week break in the action. More than 200 riders came out to the rolling hills of Cahuilla Creek on a cloudy and humid summer day for the second round of the Insano Inferno Series. The track staff had made some changes to the track since the last Vet X race at this facility, but it maintained its natural-terrain charm through the hills. The track crew put in extra effort to provide the best racing conditions possible, and it showed throughout the day's racing.
The Over 50 Novice class hit the track later in the program, so the track had been worked over from several races, developing the trademark Cahuilla chop. The class took to the track charging, though, with Michael McGowen (5, above) getting out of the gate in front. McGowen put in a start-to-finish charge and had a 13-second lead over the second-place rider, Proride.com's Phil Cruz, at the checkers. Cruz maintained a quick pace throughout the race but was unable to match McGowen's lap times. Rounding out the top three was Steve Hinckley.
When the gate dropped for the second moto, it was Haul N Zahrt Motorsports rider Roy Krull sprinting into the lead, followed by Phat Performance/FMF/EVS-backed Derek Von Hartmann and then McGowen in third. Von Hartmann was able to hold off McGowen in the opening laps, but the latter's persistence paid off and McGowen was able to leap two positions in one lap to take over the lead from Krull. That left Von Hartmann and Krull battling for the runner-up spot, and when they all crossed the line, it was McGowen taking the win and Von Hartmann in second, followed by Krull.
The overall was claimed by McGowen with his two moto wins, with second going to Cruz (2-5) and Von Hartmann (6-2) taking third overall.
The Over 30 Novice-class overall winner had to overcome a poor start in the first moto and charge through the pack. Doyle McNatt (714, above) rounded the first lap at the back of the pack and put on a seven-lap surge, passing riders all the way to second place at the finish. He was able to close to within three seconds of race winner Mark Picchiottino, but he ran out of time to catch him. McNatt had a solid second-place run, beating out Mike Boyd (644), who finished third.
In the second race, McNatt again got a midpack start, but he was able to work his way up to second by the third lap. He then set his sights on the leader, Boyd, who had just claimed the lead on the prior lap. The two riders battled, with McNatt coming out on top to claim the win when the checkered flag was thrown.
The overall win belonged to McNatt (2-1), followed by Boyd (3-2).
