Hurricane Hills hosted its annual Independence Day race and round 15 of the District 34 Championship Series on Sunday, July 4. Mother Nature provided a hot and steamy summer day, with temperatures hitting the low 90s. The Hurricane Hills track crew did their best to keep the dust at bay, but in the end it was a losing battle due to a brisk wind and scorching sun.
KTM rider Dave Ginolfi (461, above) topped the podium of the Open A class with a perfect 1-1 tally. Ginolfi got great starts in both motos, leading the pack out of the second turn and riding uncontested in both outings. Tyler Wozney, piloting a Honda, took the runner-up tier with a consistent 2-2 tally. Yamaha-mounted Nick Johnson completed the Open A podium after taking back-to-back thirds.
Ginolfi, Wozney, Ty Space and Johnson led the start of the first Open A moto. Ginolfi had a three-second advantage at the start of lap two, trailed by Space, Wozney, Johnson and Jim Doolittle. Ginolfi's lead had increased to 4 ½ seconds by the start of lap three. The top five remained unchanged until Wozney caught and passed Space near the 3 ½-lap mark; Space was displaced to third. Wozney mounted a charge to catch Ginolfi and had reduced Ginolfi's lead to a measly three seconds at the start of lap four. Ginolfi picked up the pace and pulled away, starting lap five with a six-second lead.
Lapped traffic allowed Johnson to close the gap on Space and, with the aid of a lapper, he made the pass for third in the big sweeper by the start area. Space was relegated to fourth. Ginolfi took the white flag with a five-second advantage, which Wozney reduced to four at the checkers. Johnson, Space and Doolittle completed the top five.
Ginolfi, Space, Wozney, Johnson and Ricky Lax led the start of the final Open A moto. Wozney passed Space at the end of lap two in the corner preceding the front tabletop; Space was relegated to third. Ginolfi had a seven-second lead by the start of lap three, with the top four unchanged. Doolittle was now fifth. Wozney closed the gap on Ginolfi, reducing Ginolfi's lead by a second per lap, but he ran out of time. Ginolfi took the checkers with a four-second lead. Johnson, Space and Doolittle rounded out the top five.
Space, Sean Koeller, Michael Eichler and Johnson led the start of the opening Collegeboy moto. Space continued to hold the point at the start of lap two, followed by Koeller, Eichler, Johnson and Billy Gallagher. Space started lap three four seconds ahead of Koeller. Johnson (who was now third after passing Eichler at the end of lap two), Gallagher and Eichler rounded out the top five. Johnson slipped past Koeller on the big downhill triple with a lap and a half to go. Space took the checkered flag three seconds ahead of Johnson. Koeller, Gallagher and Doug Miller followed.
Space, Johnson, Koeller, Miller and Jimmy Ide led the pack out of the second turn in the final Collegeboy moto. Ty Space (88, above) and Nick Johnson (56) battled for the lead until lap two, when Johnson sailed by Space over the Hurricane Hills dinner table, taking the point; Space was relegated to second. Miller, Koeller and Ide rounded out the top five, and those top five were spreading out by the start of lap three. Johnson took the white flag with a 5 ½-second advantage, and increased it to seven at the checkers. Space, Miller, Koeller and Ide closed out the top five.
Johnson's 2-1 tally bested Space's 1-2 score to take the top tier of the Collegeboy podium. Space took second and Koeller (3-4) was third.
