SANDY VALLEY, NV
Though not fully recovered from a persistent and annoying wrist injury, Honda hotshoe Ty Morrow was nevertheless the fastest racer at the opening round of the Sandy Valley Hot Summer Nights motocross races. Morrow won everything he entered, but his biggest challenge was in the Big Bike Open class. That's where all racers, regardless of skill level or age (provided they are on a "big bike"), get to bang bars and get after it.
Morrow swooped to the opening-moto holeshot, but Dominic DeSimone - riding "exhibition only" - certainly did just that, shooting out ahead of everyone else to grab second. Tyler Coyner wrestled his way into third.
Morrow was on fire, setting a blistering pace and being the only racer to jump the big step-up triple. DeSimone kept him somewhat in sight, but a new threat was looming, in the person of fast Cody Bolan, who was creeping closer and closer to DeSimone with every lap. Finally, the pass was made for second on the white-flag lap, but no one was catching Morrow.
Bolan ripped the holeshot in race two, just ahead of Michael Knipp. Morrow quickly moved into position to challenge for the lead, but it wasn't happening, as Bolan countered his every move for the entire race. Finally, on a frantic last lap, Morrow made the winning pass in the big corner for the win - and the overall. Bolan's great effort led Boston Morse, Jason Miller, Michael Knipp and Mike Palmer for spots two through six.
If Ty Morrow was the fastest racer at Sandy Valley on July 3, the most dominant racer would have to be Brandon "Bad Boy" Lewis (106, above). Racing in the 85cc (12-16) division, the pint-sized powerhouse proved to be untouchable and unreachable. This was made all the more impressive by the fact that this class was stacked. A visitor from Bullhead City, Arizona, Dylan McKown, rocketed off the line to lead Horton Hubbard and Lewis as race action started. Brandon was having none of that, however, shooting into the lead in the big sweeper before lap one was half over. From there, Lewis simply romped - which was amazing, considering the speed that his chasers were manufacturing.
McKown, continuing his Mike Alessi impersonation, pulled another great holeshot in moto two, this time leading Zach Leach and, of course, Lewis. Once again, Lewis was able to find more gears than his speeding competitors, finding clear air before the first lap was done. It was another romp and another overall for Lewis. Leach cemented his second overall with another runner-up finish, while holeshot artist McKown would lead Hubbard, Mike Bandouzin and Donovan Tryon in the final results.
