"Hot" does not even start to describe the weather that welcomed the riders for round three of the South Fork Dirt Riders Track Championship. Temperatures hovering around the 100-degree mark took a toll on both man and machine. This was also the day we said thank you to dad. "Happy father's day" to all the men who take the time and money to support their kids in doing what they love-race motocross. Dad takes on many roles in motocross: mechanic, manager, trainer, cook, and sometimes even racer. This reporter would like to thank my dad for the support he gave me, and on this day I got to support my son Justin Pinckard (900, below) in the Open C class, which he won.
Another dad who was proud was Kevin Bird. Kevin's son Jordan Bird (25, above) has been begging to race for some time.
"He has wanted to try this, so I decided to let him," Kevin said. "He also races carts, so we will have to see how it goes."
"There are a lot of my friends who race," Jordan said, "and we ride all the time around my house, and I wanted to try racing motocross myself."
In the first 250 D moto, Jordan did not get the best start, and he had to catch fellow Honda rider Steven Miller. Then he killed the engine, letting Miller by. Jordan re-fired his mount and made the pass, taking his first moto win ever.
Jordan had better luck in the second moto, taking another moto win and his first overall victory and trophy. By the size of the smile on his face, you would have thought he'd won a Supercross! Welcome to motocross, Jordan.
At South Fork, the fastest-growing class is the 125 class. Some of the riders are coming off of 85s, while others are going back to the 125 for a number of reasons. Kawasaki rider Zach Loehr took the first-moto win. Yamaha rider Andrew Kanik finished second, with Husky rider Randy Southard (309, above) third. In the second moto, Loehr won again, taking the overall victory. Kanik had his Yamaha on the gas and finished second for the moto and overall. In third for the moto and overall was Southard, the elder statesman in the class.
