The final round of the Florida Georgia Sports Committee Spring Series was held at Alma Motocross Park. The riders had to keep hydrated throughout the day, as the conditions were extreme, with the sun bright and the temperatures hot. The best riders persevered on the day and also won their class championships.
Seth Whiddon won the 50cc Beginner championship. The KTM rider won the last five rounds. On this day, Whiddon led every lap of the first moto. River Penland and Garrett Hortman finished second and third, respectively, trying to keep tabs on Whiddon.
In the second moto, Hortman led, with Whiddon back in fourth. By the halfway flag, Whiddon had passed Ayden Meadows and Penland. A last-lap pass was made on Hortman, and Whiddon won. Hortman took second, as Meadows, River Penland and Peyton Penland rounded out the top five.
Dunlop/Vortex's Conner Lovett (311, above) won the first three rounds and, on this day, the championship. O'Neal/Acerbis/RK Chains-backed Morgan Johnson tried keeping it close, finishing second overall in the series. Johnson took three seconds and never finished below third the entire time.
The 85 (7-11) class championship was won by only three points. Bech's Tech's Dawson Stark won the first two rounds and had dogfights with Beach Boulevard's Cody Holdeman throughout the entire series. Holdeman also won two rounds, so it came down to the last moto. Holdeman won the first moto, with Stark second. Stark got the jump in moto two, with Holdeman back in third. Justin Hendrix was stuck in the middle, but not for long. Holdeman made the pass and closed in on Stark, but he could never make the pass. At the checkers, it was Stark, Holdeman and Hendrix.
Holdeman won both motos and led every lap in the 85 (9-13) class, winning the series. Chad Stonier took two seconds on the day, over series runner-up Zack Briar (3-3).
Austin Rue won the 85 (12-15) contest and the series after close rival Max Darling took a hard fall in moto one. Rue went 2-1 over Kory Sanders' 3-2 tally and Stonier's 1-6 score.
Daniel Cook (78, above) capped off the series by winning the Supermini class. Cook won his only round on this day, but consistency paid off: He won the series. Rue took second in the both motos, behind Cook, coming up just short in the series, behind Darling.
The Girls/Women's contest went down to the wire. Ashlee Applewhite (41, below) won the last three rounds after she had a rough start to the series. Applewhite topped both motos to win the championship, over Tracy Forward. Cycle Gear's Shelby Krech went 2-2 on the day, over Forward's 3-3 score. Morgan Johnson wrapped up fourth on the day with a 4-4 tally.
The tracks were tough, and the overall series attendance saw a record turnout. The sponsors supporting the series were Western Power Sports, Fly Racing, Beach Boulevard Motorsports, Beck's Tech Suspension, Loud Mouth, Dirt Life, Moto Concepts, PJ 1, North Jax Motorsports, K-Rae Graphics, Scott, Michelin, and Racing Media Services.
