AMA Southeast Youth Regional MX Championship
Aonia Pass Motocross Park

Smith Sweeps Aonia Youth Regional

WASHINGTON, GA

This was the largest event yet held at the13-year-old Aonia Pass facility, but the experienced track crew handled all tasks with ease and efficiency. Rider turnout was huge, with 28 states and three countries represented. Ten of the 17 classes had to run divisional elimination motos to accommodate the 40-bike maximum.

With the Southeast Regional Championship honors up for grabs, along with the coveted advancement positions for the upcoming AMA Amateur National Championships, competition was fierce throughout. The three-moto format combined with unusually hot weather (100 degrees in the shade on both days) to create challenging conditions for both riders and machines.2010 0612 Aonia Pass Jordan Smith 62

There were a significant number of riders in contention for multiple-class wins, but North Carolina's Jordan Smith (62, above) was the only competitor to emerge with more than one class win. During the tough 85cc (12-14) Stock and Modified contests, Smith garnered early leads, nailing down five consecutive moto wins. Then, on the last lap of the final Stock moto, Smith had moved into second spot, behind Darren Walsh. A second-place finish would secure the overall for Smith, but he aimed higher and managed to get by Walsh before the flag, completing a perfect six-moto sweep. Alexander Frye (2-2-5) and Kyler West (4-3-4) joined Smith on the podium. Walsh's 7-6-2 tally earned fifth overall, behind Bodie Colangelo.

Claudio Leocata narrowly missed taking double-class wins. He won each of the Schoolboy One motos but came up just a bit short in Schoolboy Two racing, finishing second in a points tie, behind Kyle Peters, who recovered from a first-moto spill and eventually scored 3-1-1 for the championship, over Leocata (1-2-2) and Cody Gragg (2-5-10).2010 0612 Aonia Pass Grayson Graham 124

Grayson Graham (124, above, battling with Colton Eigenmann, 815, and Tristan Lewis, 735) overcame a mediocre start in the third moto of 65cc (10-11) racing, earning the gold with a 1-1-2 score. In the 65cc (7-11) Modified class, Graham was on track for another class win but, while holding second spot on the last lap of the final moto, he crashed over a jump. Graham's 1-1-24 tally was still good enough for the final transfer slot, at seventh.

Tristan Charbonneau notched a 1-1-1 score to take the 85cc (9-11) Modified gold. In the Stock class, Charbonneau posted a different string of "ones" (11-1-1), earning the bronze.

Gage Linville had to come from behind in the second 50cc (4-6) moto, eventually scoring 1-4-1 to claim the championship in a points tie over Cody Russell (2-1-3). Contender Linville carded a DNF in the final 50cc Shaft Drive moto, handing the moto win and the overall to Ryan Pruitt.

Toni Kirby dominated the Women's division, posting convincing wins each time out. Gunning for the silver during the final moto, Victoria Pearce charged through the pack into second spot. On the last lap, however, her bike's drive chain snapped. Pearce managed to push her bike the remaining distance to the finish line, where she received a standing ovation from the grandstands. Pearce's 2-3-19 score placed her at eighth overall, while Shelby Rolen (3-2-2) took the silver, over Mariah Andrew (4-5-4).
