BINGHAMTON, NY
The fifth round of the Northeast Classic Motocross Series was supposed to be run on Sunday, June 6, at the scenic Broome-Tioga Sports Center. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other ideas. Torrential downpours several hours before the event dropped at least two inches of rain. Another storm moved through the area, postponing the riders' meeting and practice and dumping another inch or so of additional rain, making the track a quagmire, so many riders decided to forego the event and head home. Therefore, Hurd Motorsports, promoters of Broome-Tioga, decided to postpone the fifth round of the Northeast Classic Series. Additional storms were in the forecast, so the promoter decided to amend the race program to a one-moto format to complete racing before another storm hit the area.
Honda pilot Josh Emmi (961, right, leading) topped the extremely competitive Open Pro/Expert class. Emmi, Mitch Dougherty (behind Emmi), Mark Rivera, Joshua Stein and Jay Weller led the start of the Open Pro/Expert moto. Jack Carpenter descended the National Hill in the point position after half a lap. Willy Shatrau, Emmi, Weller and Stein followed.
Carpenter continued to lead at the start of lap two. Emmi passed Shatrau, taking second. Weller and Stein continued to hold fourth and fifth, respectively. Emmi closed the gap on Carpenter, and the two descended the Hill, battling for the lead. They bumped bars at the base of the Hill, and Carpenter held Emmi at second. Emmi came back to make the pass for the lead a few turns prior to the start of lap three; Carpenter was relegated to second. Third through fifth remained unchanged.
Emmi descended the Hill four seconds ahead of Carpenter and started lap four with a five-second lead, which increased to 10 seconds on lap five, when Carpenter went down. Shatrau inherited second, Weller third, Dougherty fourth and Andy King fifth.
Emmi started lap six 12 seconds ahead of Shatrau and took the checkers with a 14-second lead. Shatrau, Weller, Dougherty and King completed the top five.
Weller, Dougherty and Emmi led the start of the 250 Pro/Expert moto. Weller continued to hold the point after a half-lap. Emmi, Dougherty, Daniel O'Hara and King rounded out the top five.
Weller started the second lap with a four-second advantage. The top five had already started spreading out due to the conditions. Emmi made a mistake somewhere on the back side of the Hill and dropped out of the race. Dougherty inherited second, O'Hara third, King fourth and Matt Moore fifth.
Weller continued to lead at the start of lap three, but Dougherty was beginning to cut into Weller's lead, reducing it to four seconds at the start of lap four and three on lap five. Dougherty made the pass for the lead two turns before the start of the lap six; Weller was relegated to second. Dougherty took the checkered flag with a four-second lead. Weller, King, O'Hara and Moore closed out the top five.
