Space, Hicks Perfect at NE Classic Warmup


BINGHAMTON, NY

Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the beautiful Broome-Tioga Sports Center, hosted a warmup race on Saturday, June 5, to give racers an additional day of racing prior to round five of the Northeast Classic Motocross Series. Space, Kawasaki pilot Jake Scott, Sam Fritz, Honda rider Cody Sawyer, and Matt Vacendak (350, above) led the pack out of the first turn in the opening 250 B moto. When the leaders emerged from the front rhythm section, Space remained at the point, with Scott right on his tail. Fritz held third. Vacendak passed Sawyer, taking fourth. Vacendak closed the gap on Fritz and made the pass for third at the end of lap one; Fritz was pushed back to fourth.

Space started lap two four seconds ahead of Scott. Vacendak continued to hold third. Sawyer and Jimmy Ide rounded out the top five. Sawyer and Ide sailed past Vacendak in the front section after a slight bobble, taking third and fourth. Space started lap three with a five-second lead. Scott held Space's pace for the rest of the seven-lap moto, taking the checkers five seconds behind Space. Sawyer, Ide and James Coen completed the top five.

Space, Fritz, Sawyer, Vacendak and Scott led the start of the final 250 B moto. Space continued to hold the point, just ahead of Sawyer in second, when the leaders exited the front section. Fritz, Vacendak and Ide rounded out the top five. Two turns before the end of lap one, Vacendak, Ide and Scott took third, fourth and fifth; Fritz was relegated to sixth.

Space held a three-second lead at the start of lap three, and that remained unchanged at the start of lap five. Vacendak trailed Sawyer by 15 seconds.

Scott and Ide passed Vacendak at the start of lap six to take third and fourth; Vacendak was pushed back to sixth. Space took the checkered flag with a six-second lead. Sawyer, Scott, Ide and Vacendak followed.

Kawasaki pilot Kevin Hicks (131, above) dominated the Open C class. Hicks, Chris Ray, John Welch, Garrett Madison and Eric Bagne led the start of the first moto. Hicks quickly began to gap the field and started lap two seven seconds ahead of Welch, in second. Dustin Larson, Ray and Bagne rounded out the top five.

Hicks started lap three with a 10-second advantage, which increased to 12 seconds on lap four, 14 at the white flag and 16 at the checkers. Ray, Bagne, Madison and Marko Novosec followed.

Hicks, Larson, Welch, Ray and Vincent Gennett led the start of the final moto. Hicks once again set a blistering pace and started lap two with a three-second lead, which increased to seven on lap three, 12 on lap four, 16 on lap five and 22 at the checkered flag. Ray, Larson, Novosec and Welch completed the top five.

Hicks (1-1) won overall, Ray took second with his consistent 2-2 finishes, and Larson completed the rostrum via his 6-3 tally.
