Savatgy Gets All A's in Schoolboy

LIVINGSTON, TN

Thunder Valley Raceway in Livingston, Tennessee, played host to the season's first Loretta Lynn Regional Championship. More than 700 riders competed for the six spots in each class that guaranteed them advancement to the ultimate motocross vacation, the U.S. Amateur National Championships at the Loretta Lynn Ranch. Battling the weather, heat, and changing track conditions, riders from 21 states, five Canadian provinces, and four countries competed in 16 classes for the golden ticket to the Ranch.2010 0605 Thunder Valley Raceway LLQ Joey Savatgy 176

Joey Savatgy (176, above) was unbeatable in the two Youth big-bike classes, Schoolboy 1 and Schoolboy 2. Jake Pinhancos was the big winner in the 65cc classes, winning both the 65cc (10-11) Stock and 65cc (7-11) Modified classes. The biggest winner of the weekend was Team Green/Pro Circuit rider Adam Cianciarulo (92, below); he was tops in the 85cc (12-14) Modified, Supermini 1 and Supermini 2 classes.2010 0605 Thunder Valley Raceway LLQ Adam Cianciarulo 92

A first-lap crash left Savatgy at the rear of the pack in moto one of the Schoolboy class. South American transplant Claudio Leocata took the lead and cruised to an easy moto win, followed by Zach Bell (100, below) and Cole Thompson, with Savatgy fighting his way back to the fourth spot.2010 0605 Thunder Valley Raceway LLQ Zach Bell 100

Moto two saw Savatgy take an early lead, over Thompson, Bell and Leocata. With Savatgy cruising out front, Bell put the charge on Thompson for the second spot. Taking chances all over the track, Bell was able to close up on Thompson as the pair left Leocata behind. Bell's aggressiveness finally caught up with him and he slid out in a corner, leaving Thompson an easy second and handing third over to Leocata.

Moto three was more of the same for Savatgy, with Bell running in the second spot, followed by Thompson and Colton Ford. Bell, not satisfied with a qualifying spot, pushed the pace to the end but could not catch Savatgy, so it was Savatgy, Leocata and Bell on the podium, with Thompson and Ford rounding out the top five.Regional_JPEG_Ad_Black

Not to be outdone by his big brother, Chase Bell was the class of the 85cc (12-14) Stock class. Chase, Steven Gretchen and Donny Brown were the top qualifiers into the final two motos. Chase launched out of the gate and led each lap of moto two. Gretchen and Matt Burkeen ran in second and third, followed by Brown and Nick Gaines. Brown dispatched Burkeen for the third spot, and at the finish it was Chase Bell, followed by Gretchen, Brown, Burkeen and Gaines.

Mother Nature reared her ugly head and sent a steady rain for about an hour before moto three. Chase Bell was out front early but found the ground on a few occasions, letting Brown by for the lead. Keith Tucker ran a steady third, followed by Honda-mounted Koby Conrad and Burkeen. Slogging through the muck, it was Brown with the win and Chase Bell in second, followed by Tucker. Conrad and Burkeen were fourth and fifth, respectively. Chase Bell took the overall, followed by Gretchen and Brown.
