PALMDALE, CA
Cameron Doll (345, above) split moto wins with Ryan Moscrop to top the 450 Novice class during the opening round of another season of the California Racing Club's Saturday night motocross, held at Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale.
First-moto action saw Doll put his Jardine/Nationwide Cycle/Riders' Choice Performance-backed Yamaha into the point position right from the drop of the gate to lead Moscrop and Robert Angell. Moscrop kept Doll in his sights and was able to make a pass on the penultimate circuit to earn the first-moto win. Third at the checkers went to Angell, followed by Pasha Afshar.
Being the final race on the evening's schedule, the second 450 Novice moto was extended to 15 laps. Doll absconded with the holeshot, ahead of Moscrop and Angell. Moscrop couldn't find a way around Doll, but Doll couldn't pull away, either, and the two front-runners spent the entire 15 laps glued together, with Doll eventually taking the hard-fought overall win on his 2-1 effort. Angell was again third, over Afshar.
Brenden Murray (62, left) disappeared with the 85cc Open first-moto victory aboard his No Fear/Cycle Gear/661-sponsored Honda, ahead of Willy Simons Jr., Gordon Keller and Ryan Pekarek. Murray got the holeshot in moto two, but a bobble on the opening lap dropped him back to fourth place. Simons led the charge out front for a little more than two laps before Murray was back out front and pulling away for a clean sweep of the class. Simons easily finished in second place again, topping Pekarek and Keller.
Cory Conner flew his Disturbed Designs-backed CR450F to a convincing two-moto romp in the 450 Intermediate class. Jay Shabaan was runner-up to Conner in the first moto, over Derrick Hernandez and Brandon Doll. Shabaan and Brandon argued over second place for the first half of moto two until Brandon pulled off due to problems. Hernandez finished third again, and Brandon Doll rejoined the race to salvage fourth.
The first 250 Novice moto saw Kawasaki-mounted Thomas Spalliero (151, right) go wire to wire for the win, ahead of Jason Spriggs and Ryan Hernandez. Hernandez jumped out to an early lead in moto two, but it wasn't long before Spalliero was knocking on his back door. Spalliero made the pass, and then Hernandez shadowed his every move for a couple of laps before Spalliero pulled away for a perfect 1-1 showing on the evening.
