Round 5: J.B. Memorial Gran Prix at Los Angeles County Raceway

Kranyak Kills 'em at Dunestown GP

PALMDALE, CA2010 0531 LACR Sean Kranyak 427

Yamaha-mounted Sean Kranyak (427, right) came from out of the pack to earn the 450 Pro-class win at Los Angeles County Raceway during the 33rd annual running of the Riders' Choice Performance/FMF/Renthal-sponsored California Racing Club J.B. Memorial Dunestown Series Gran Prix.

Factory Honda Motocross team manager Erik Kehoe put his Red Bull-backed CR450F out front on the opening circuit to lead Robert Perez, Chris See and Adam Lane. Kranyak suffered a poor start, but by the end of lap two he was up into third place, behind Kehoe and Perez. A lap later, Kranyak held down the runner-up position and was closing in on Kehoe. Kranyak reeled in the former factor star and took over the top spot just before the midway point.

Once out front, the race was all Kranyak's: He made it look easy as he pulled away to earn the first-place payback. Perez held down second place for most of the second half of the race before both Lane and See slipped past him with time running out. Kehoe ended up rounding out the top five.

Kyle Carpenter led a little more than a lap of the 250 Novice-class racing until a bobble dropped him to the back of the pack. Rud Niblack inherited the lead and ran out front for a lap before Dalton Zahrt took over. Zahrt's reign would last for nearly 30 minutes before Evan Kelly found a way around him. Kelly would continue on aboard his Malcolm Smith/Scott/Pro Circuit-backed Yamaha for the hard-fought win. Zahrt finished in second place, a safe distance ahead of Austin McWaters. Fourth went to Robert Angell, followed by Niblack and John Milner.

Mark Harwell had his YZ450F at the front of the Senior Expert ranks up until the 15-minute mark, when Frank Costanzo was able to reel him in and execute the pass. Harwell stuck with Costanzo and was soon joined by Eddie Davis, who found his way around both Harwell and Costanzo a short time later for a lead that he'd hold until the checkers waved. Costanzo ended up collecting the second-place trophy, ahead of Harwell, Bob Burns and Tom Burgess.

It was all Broc Shoemaker in the 250 Intermediate class, as the Yamaha pilot dominated from start to finish. Mitchell Acoin and Tanner Lovgren traded second back and forth, with Acoin coming out on top when it counted most, on the final lap. Dylan Bouchez and Cody Eastman finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Kurt Sofka Jr. came from dead last off the start in the Old Timers Over 50 Masters class to take the well-deserved victory. Keevan Acevedo hounded Craig Staley for second for nearly the entire 45 minutes before making a pass stick at the end of the race. Burns was fourth, ahead of Garry Conner.

One of the best races of the day was the 125cc Retro contest, in which Rich Truchinski and Dan Berg swapped the lead numerous times. Truchinski eventually pulled out with problems, handing the YZ125-mounted Berg the win. Eric Casas ran in third for most of the race before he, too, slowed with problems, allowing Michelle Horton and Kenny Zahrt to move up into second and third, respectively.
