DADE CITY, FL
Practice for round eight finished under a light rain, but just before the racing started, the deluge struck. Riders who finished each race did so through sheer determination. Many of the riders who race two classes did not finish, but one who did was R.J. Hampshire (21, above). The T Stead Developmental Racing/Six 12 Suspension-sponsored Hampshire won the 250 B and 125-250 Schoolboy classes.
The first class Hampshire raced was the Schoolboy class. Hampshire sloshed his way to the win over close rival Bodie Colangelo. Hampshire extended his points lead over the rest of the field. Hernando Oil's Rich Wilkes took the final podium spot. Kody Kuykendall held off Pro Action's Canyon Vancil for fourth.
The 250 B class was held later in the evening, when the mud and ruts were deeper. Hampshire had no problems and took the win. C 4 Racing's Anthony Zaffino tried keeping it close but had to settle for second. Kody Kuykendall rounded out the podium.![]()
The Monster Energy Sponsors Cup took to the track, and it looked like Butler Brothers' Jason Thomas had the holeshot, but Extreme Honda's Michael Picone (972, above) slid under to take the lead. Picone pulled away by a couple of seconds. Thomas tried keeping Picone in his sights but also had to contend with Pit Stop Graffiix's Tyler Livesay, in third. Livesay had passed Kissimmee Motorsports' Kory Keylon earlier and caught Livesay after the halfway flag. Picone took his fifth win in a row in the Sponsors Cup. Thomas finished second, showing potential in only his second race of the series. Livesay settled for third, over Keylon. Huss Drilling's Ian Millet kept fifth the entire moto.
The Junior Girls' class waited about 10 minutes for parts of the track to be drained before their race. When the race started, a pileup in the first turn saw points leader Shelby Quast's bike stuck in the swingarm of another bike. Courtney Long took control and never looked back en route to the win. The riders behind her shuffled for position. Osiris' Samantha Malik settled into second. Angelica Rego was third early on, but a fall dropped her to fifth. Alexus Gunther took a distant third. Monster Energy/O'Neal-backed Morgan Johnson found herself in fifth and then fourth when Rego fell. Rego made a couple of last-ditch efforts to pass on the last lap, but Johnson got the fourth spot at the flag.
The Memorial Day Weekend started early on Friday, with the 12 Hours of Dade City. This was a fundraiser for the That Others May Live Foundation. Teams of five competed in the race, which brought out many Florida veterans, including Billy Wood, Kenny Keylon and Troy Adams. Tim Ferry and Chad Reed were also in attendance to support the cause. Team Fairway Golf completed the most laps, with a total of 278. Some of the competing riders helped award the check during the Saturday night program (below), and more than $7,700 was raised.
