TAYLORVILLE, IL
After a cool, damp spring, summer arrived with a bang. On this day, the mercury hit the mid-90s, but the crew at South Fork did a great job on the track surface, making for some hot racing as well.
This year, South Fork will again host the Midwest Best Series, a Ponca City Qualifier, and the FCA camp, with Andrew Short, the Sipes brothers, MotoConcepts and others spending the week with the riders.
On this day, the 250 B class was on fire! In the first moto, Suzuki rider Zach Corman took the holeshot and put in a hot lap before Kawasaki rider Blake Copeland moved past him for the lead and, eventually, the moto win. Kawasaki rider Ben Elson (105, above) was putting in a great ride, and he was next to pass Corman, taking second. Then Corman went down in a corner, and Kawasaki rider Chris Brauch took third for the moto.
In the second moto, Elson was on a mission and charging 100 percent. Copeland was all over him for the whole race, shadowing his every move. At the end, Elson took the moto win and overall victory. Copeland took second for the moto and overall. Third in the moto went to Brauch, but not without another fight from Corman. These two riders battled the entire way, though it looked like Corman was having trouble at times. After the race, Corman discovered his bike had a broken shifter.
Carson Culp went to the line for his first time ever on a 65. In the 65cc Senior class, Suzuki rider Jacob Lancaster put the hammer down, taking the first-moto win. Kawasaki rider Bryton McDonald finished second, with Suzuki rider Jeff Cobb in third. Hard luck hit Noah Watts, who was riding well, only to have his bike break, taking him out of the moto. Culp finished fifth.
In the second moto, Lancaster again took the moto win, as well as the overall victory. This time Watts was on the gas, taking second for the moto. Third for the moto went to Cobb, giving him second overall. Third overall went to McDonald. Culp finished fifth - not bad for his first time out.
Cade Culp went to the line for his first time ever in the 50 Junior class. In the first moto, Edgar Lewis (40, above) was flying en route to taking the moto win. Dalton Gunterman finished second, with Cade Culp third.
In the second moto, Lewis was again on the gas, winning the moto and overall. Gunterman finished second for the moto and overall. Culp made his way around the track without trouble and finished third for the moto and overall.
