LONDON, KY
When you combine Loretta Lynn's area qualifying, Southern All-Stars Series points and AMA Pro Am points, you get the awesome field that competed at Daniel Boone MX in London, Kentucky, on May 16. Persistent rain showers provided conditions that included hard-packed, loamy, rutted, slippery and, at the end of the day, gooey. Darrell Sims was the star of the day, winning the overall in three classes. At over 50 years of age, this Honda rider from Clarkesville, Georgia, dominated the "plus" category, winning five out of six motos in the Over 40, Over 45 and Over 50 classes. David Buller Jr. had a dominating day as well, winning three out of four motos en route to overall wins in the 250 B Modified and 450 B Modified classes. Adam Cianciarulo battled first-turn crashes but also won three of the four motos in the 85cc (12-14) Modified and Supermini Two classes.
Jacob Saylor (198, above) was the only other rider to capture more than one class win, securing the Vet Expert and 450 A Pro Sport victories. The first 450 A moto saw Saylor jet to an early lead, over Kawasaki jockey Jon Boruff and Yamaha-mounted Marcus Thompson. Boruff led lap two, only to be overtaken by Saylor, who went unchallenged for the moto win. Boruff and Thompson, sporting old-school Yamaha gear, rounded out the podium, followed by Cameron Stone and Central American speedster Jetro Salazar.
Saylor led the pack out of the first turn in a very sloppy moto two, with Ben Denton and Sean Cunningham right on his heels. Salazar enjoyed a much better start, running in fourth, with Stone close behind. Saylor stretched his lead out in the slippery mud while Cunningham put his mud-riding skills on display, moving into second. At the finish, it was Saylor, Cunningham, Stone, Salazar and Christopher Akaydin comprising the top five.
The best motos of the day showcased two of the top riders in the country in the Schoolboy Two ranks. Justin Summers (444, above) and Joey Savatgy battled to the finish in what could only be described as "moto brawls." Savatgy led lap one of moto one, with Summers close behind. Summers made the pass in an off-camber to lead the second lap. On the final jump of the next three laps, Savatgy dived to the inside and attempted to scrub under Summers, but to no avail. On the final lap, Savatgy went for broke and blew through the final corner and settled for third, with Cody Gragg moving into the second spot.
Moto two was a mudder, with Savatgy leading and Summers on his back wheel. Savatgy pulled away slightly at the midpoint of the race, but on the final lap Summers pulled even through the final straight, a tricky jump section. Side by side, they rocketed through the final turn, with Savatgy edging out Summers for the win and, with it, the overall. Gragg was third overall, followed by South Carolina's Matthew Beverly.
