LONDON, KY
Riders from Texas to New York showed up at Daniel Boone Motocross in London, Kentucky, for one of the last rounds of qualifying for the Loretta Lynn Amateur National Championships. They enjoyed the facility's layout, which takes full advantage of the elevation changes in the valley in which the track was built. Gage Linville and Adam Cianciarulo (92, above) each captured two class wins: Lineville dominated the 50cc Shaft Drive and 50cc (4-6) classes, winning every moto, while Cianciarulo was the top Mini rider, winning the 85cc (12-14) Stock and Supermini One classes.
Transplanted Californian Joey Savatgy piloted his Suzuki RM125 to the front of the pack in Schoolboy One action, followed by Canadian riders Cole Varty and Jake Streichert. Rock River Powersports Yamaha rider Cody Gragg started in the fourth spot but quickly took over second on the first lap. Varty had trouble and was passed by Streichert. Meanwhile, Savatgy left the field behind. At the finish, it was Savatgy, followed by Gragg and Streichert, with Zach Loehr overcoming a bad start to secure fourth.
Savatgy took the lead in moto two and never looked back. Gragg got a better start and finished in the second spot, followed by Varty and Streichert.
In the 85cc (12-14) Stock class, the clear favorite was Monster Energy/Pro Circuit rider Adam Cianciarulo. He took the lead coming out of the first turn and stretched it out to eight seconds over Rockstar Suzuki rider Steven Gretchen. Matt Burkeen, Alex Frye and Hunter Hilton rounded out the top five. Cianciarulo won the moto by an incredible 35 seconds. Gretchen finished second, followed by Frye, who tripled past Burkeen on the last lap.
Cianciarulo again pulled the holeshot in moto two, followed by Burkeen, Frye and Hilton. Burkeen kept Cianciarulo in sight for just over a lap and pulled away from Hilton and Frye. Gretchen was buried in the pack after having suffered a first-turn crash. As the laps wound down, Cianciarulo stretched out his lead over the field. Burkeen slid out in a turn on the last lap, letting Hilton, Frye and Gretchen by. A.C. took the win, followed by Hilton, Frye, Gretchen and Burkeen.
In Supermini One, Cianciarulo was again the class of the field, winning the first moto easily, over Dakota Alix and Gretchen.
Moto two showed the true speed of Port Orange, Florida's Cianciarulo, as a first-turn crash left him well back in the field. Moving into the top five on lap two, Cianciarulo had the leaders in sight. Alix crashed, making the task of catching the leaders a bit easier. With two laps to go, A.C. passed Gretchen for the lead and, eventually, the moto win.
The overall standings had Cianciarulo in first, with Gretchen and Alix rounding out the podium.
