Round 5: Arizona Cycle Park

Pena, Keeling Keeping It Pinned at Copperstate

BUCKEYE, AZ

Joseph Pena, contesting the 250 Intermediate class, and Colton Keeling, contesting the Supermini, 85 (12-13), 150F and 85 Open classes, took the overall in their respective classes at round five of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Championships, presented by Scott USA, Gordy's Bicycle, The Pit Enterprise, Amsoil and Dishman Motorsports.2010 0508 ACP Joseph Pena 39

Joseph Pena (39, above) battled with Austin Wells in the first 250 Intermediate moto. By midway, Pena was leading, with Wells right behind him. After the two went by the finish line, Wells tried to go on the inside of Pena on the left-hand corner before the whoop section. Wells grabbed too much rear brake and stalled his engine, and that let Austin Glick move up to second. Wells eventually got his bike restarted, but not before going a lap down to the leaders. Pena took the moto win, with Glick a distant second.

In the second moto, it was once again Pena out in front, with Glick in tow. But Pena was able to draw away from Glick and was more than 20 seconds ahead when the checkered flag came out. The Pit Enterprise-backed Pena was first; then came Glick, with Wells third.2010 0508 ACP Colton Keeling 45

Colton Keeling (45, above) used good starts in every one of his motos and parlayed that into a perfect night, going eight for eight in moto wins. The Dishman/BuckyMX.com/Northland/5th Gear Sprockets-backed Keeling beat out Austin Vallery in the 150Fs, Dakota Mikkelsen in the 85 Open class, and Keegan Kirkendall in the Supermini and 85 (12-13) classes.

Alex Widen was able to garner another overall win in the 250 Junior class. Mike Villegas absconded with the lead in the first moto, followed by Widen, Odin Bartlett, Thomas Campbell and Tanner Garcia. Campbell went by Bartlett on lap two in the sand pit. Meanwhile, Garcia went down and slipped back to ninth. Villegas had the rhythm section down, gapping Widen, only to lose it when Widen was able to triple up the side hill section while Villegas doubled-singled the same section.

On lap three, Widen tried the outside line on a right-hander but his front end washed out, giving up second to Campbell. Bartlett was able to get around Widen momentarily, but Widen outjumped Bartlett in the rhythm section to take back third. Then, on the next lap, Campbell went down, dropping himself back to seventh before picking off Andre Wyche and Bartlett before the checkers came out. When the shuffling was over, it was Villegas taking the moto win, followed by Widen, Jonathan Finman, James Singer and Campbell.

Villegas garnered the lead for the second moto, followed by Widen and Campbell. But Campbell found another gear, as he went by Widen on lap two, just past the whoop section. Then he gobbled up Villegas on lap three to take over the top spot. Villegas had his hands full with Widen, who was applying pressure. Angel Molina got a fourth-place start and would remain in that spot for the entire moto, but the fifth spot had several players fighting over it. Bartlett started in fifth but got passed by Singer on the second lap. Then Singer pulled off before the end of the race, giving the spot over to Cody Granados. Meanwhile, Widen went by Villegas for second. Campbell took the win by a large margin. Widen was second, followed by Villegas, Molina, Granados and Wyche.
