Another series went into the books as Vet X closed out its six-round Spring Series at Competitive Edge MX. The track utilized the perimeter areas of the main track, making for lap times of well over two minutes and long motos. The track had been ripped deep in the morning, creating perfect ruts through many of the corners and making multiple lines for passing opportunities.
Curt Bennett (319, above) came out to Competitive Edge determined to take home the win in the Over 40 Novice class. He started off the day with an early lead in the first moto. Dave Riley chased him in the early laps, trying to take the lead, but Yamaha/Ride MX/Fox-backed Rocky Aiello caught up to him, and the two riders battled for the runner-up position, allowing Bennett to cruise to the win. Aiello and Riley fought through the closing laps, but Aiello was able to make the pass on the last lap and cross the line in second, with Riley right behind.
When the gate dropped for the second moto, it was Riley charging to the lead in the opening lap, followed by Aiello and Bennett. The race shaped up into a three-way battle, with all three riders able to make a charge for the win. Aiello and Riley battled for the lead for three laps. Behind them, Bennett was quietly picking up the pace and taking advantage of the leaders' concentrating on their battle, and he was able to make the pass for second, dropping Aiello down a notch. On the very next lap, Bennett again put his head down and this time passed Riley for the lead. When the checkers flew, it was Bennett claiming the win, followed by Aiello and Riley.
Bennett (1-1) took the overall victory, followed by Aiello (2-2) and Riley (3-3).
Rocky Aiello (11, right) also put some work in the Over 30 Novice class, battling for the overall with Too Tech's Rick Johnson. Aiello worked his way up from a midpack start, but he was unable to catch leader Johnson.
In the second moto, Aiello jumped into the early lead and held on for three laps until Johnson caught up and passed him for the lead. The two riders battled for another two laps until Aiello charged back into the lead on the last lap for the win. Aiello(2-1) was the overall winner, followed by Johnson (1-2), while third overall belonged to Joe Pena (3-3).
In the Over 40 Amateur class, Mark Flinders took an easy overall win, as he pulled huge gaps on the field throughout both races. Behind him, Cycle Gear/Wickoff Racing/Factory Effex-backed Gary Lama and Dan Osborne fought for the runner-up position. The two riders split moto finishes, with Lama (3-2) taking second overall, edging out Osborne (2-3) in third.
