BLOUNTVILLE, TN
Perfect Tennessee spring weather was enjoyed by the riders attempting to qualify for the Loretta Lynn Southeast Regional Championship at Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tennessee. Looking like a scene from the movie Field of Dreams, Muddy Creek's perfect, loamy soil was on display for all too see on Saturday morning.
Taking advantage of the perfect track conditions was Anderson, South Carolina's Cameron Cannon (7, above). He put his Neely Racing KTM 65 at the front of the pack at the start of each moto in the 65cc (10-11) Stock class and rocketed to uncontested victories. With Cannon gone, the battle was for second, between Yasnier Laureano and Matthew Hale. Cannon captured the overall with 1-1 moto scores, Laureano (2-2) was second overall, and Hale was third after finishing in the third spot in both motos.
Cannon continued his dominant ways in the 85cc (9-11) Stock class. Florida rider Estes Saborio led a stacked class out of the first turn but was quickly dispatched by Cannon. Riding a Suzuki RM85, Cannon pulled a slight lead on lap one, while Justin Dunn made his way into the second spot. Not too far back were Saborio and Will Cody. Laureano moved into the third spot on lap three, and at the finish it was Cannon, Dunn, Laureano and Saborio.
Cannon led moto two from the gate drop to the finish. Triangle Cycles rider Dunn was second, with Will Cody running in the third spot. Cannon again stretched out his lead, with Dunn running comfortably in second. As the laps wound down, Laureano was able to overcome a bad start to find his way into the third spot. Saborio and Cody were running fourth and fifth. Cannon secured the overall (his second of the day), followed by Dunn, Laureano, Saborio and Cody.
Aaron Plessinger put his Rock River Powersports Yamaha YZ125 at the front of the pack in moto one of the Schoolboy 1 class. He was followed closely by Tyler McSwain and Hector Rodriguez. McSwain took over the point with a slick pass over the biggest jump on the track. Plessinger fought back but could not make the pass on McSwain, who pulled away slightly in the closing laps. Moto one ended with McSwain out front, followed by Plessinger, Rodriguez and Suzuki Supermini-mounted Jace Owen.
Plessinger was again followed by McSwain at the start of moto two. The third spot was occupied by KTM rider Mason Collins. McSwain made his way by Plessinger on lap three, and Rodriguez moved into the third spot, relegating Collins to fourth. At the finish, it was again McSwain, Plessinger and Rodriguez, followed by Collins and Cody Rowe. Overall, it was a Yamaha sweep of the podium, with McSwain, Plessinger and Rodriguez all mounted on blue bikes.
