AXTON, VA
Historic Lake Sugar Tree, home of Amateur Nationals, Trans AMA and Outdoor National races, played host to one of the final rounds of area qualifying for the Loretta Lynn Amateur National Championships. With Gary Bailey and Ryan Smith looking after the track, conditions were perfect for side-by-side racing. The competition was fierce, and only factory Honda/Red Bull/JAMs rider Cooper Webb (175, above), riding a CR85, was able to capture more than one class victory.
In the 85 (12-14) Stock class, Webb (175, below) led Matt Burkeen (820), Bennett Mantooth (248), Alex Frye (28), Brent East (511), Sam Gale (529), Travis Dawson (95) and Trevor Shaffer (91) off the start. When it was all said and done, Webb went 1-1 for the overall, over Rockstar Suzuki rider Frye and Serious MX Yamaha rider Burkeen.
Webb followed up his 85-class win with a dominant victory in the Supermini class aboard his Honda CRF150.
Negotiating the Lake Sugar Tree downhill start, Ohio native Michael Mahaffey led the 250 B Stock class into the wide first-turn sweeper. Tyler Reynolds, Joshua Hall, Nick Desiderio and Honda-mounted Nicholas Patterson rounded out the top five on lap one. Lap three saw Austin Coon make his move into the top five, passing riders in bunches to secure the third spot. With a lap to go, Coon made the pass for the lead. Reynolds charged his two-stroke YZ250 into the second spot. At the finish, it was Coon taking the win. Patterson took advantage of several crashes and finished up in the second spot, followed by Desiderio, Mahaffey and Hall.
Reynolds was the first up the hill in moto two, followed by Coon and Jacob Knable. When Reynolds went down, Coon inherited the point position and then pulled away to an easy moto win. Knable stayed strong in second, with Desiderio, Hall and Mahaffey rounding out the top five.
In the 85cc (9-11) class, it was Suzuki-mounted Pennsylvania rider Scott Meshey leading the pack. While Meshey was opening up a big lead, the rider on the move was Brandon Hartranft, who piloted his Yamaha into the second spot on lap three and then moved into the lead when Meshey slid out in a slick off-camber turn. Crossing the finish line first was Hartranft, with an easy win. Meshey was second, followed by Delta, Pennsylvania's Mark Hushon, Hayden Hefner and Marshall Leonard.
Hartranft captured the lead at the start of moto two, making his quest for the win less complicated. Meshey took the second spot early in the moto but could not run Hartranft down. Hartranft won the moto and the overall, followed by Meshey (2-2). Rounding out the podium was Hushon.
The first moto of the 450 A class was like two different races. Local favorite Wes Gauldin led early and pulled away from the field. As the moto reached the midpoint, Gauldin faded, and now it was Nic Hayes and Frankie Lettieri pulling away from the field.
Moto two saw Gauldin out front for the first couple of laps. Lettieri took the lead on lap two, followed by Hayes and Broc Schmelyun. Hayes put the pressure on Lettieri, and the two ran wheel to wheel in a furious battle for the lead. Lettieri pushed Hayes wide and Hayes went over a berm, handing second to Schmelyun. At the finish, it was Lettieri, Schmelyun and Seth Rarick on the podium, with Hayes and Tim Savidge rounding out the top five.
