At round four of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Championship presented by Scott USA, Gordy's Bicycle, The Pit Enterprise, Amsoil and Dishman Motorsports, 450 Junior rider Alex Widen (132, above) and 250 Junior Tristan Hunter (601, below) took the overall victories in their respective classes. This was the first round of the season that was run on a Saturday night. Promoter Bobby White presented a new design under the lights and added lots and lots of sand in certain sections of the racecourse.
Widen made quick work of the 450 Junior class by nabbing the holeshot in both motos and never looking back. In the first moto, Widen was clear by 10 seconds over James Singer when the checkers came down. Third went to Logan Rauch, followed by Matt Moon, Brett Hanna and Andre Wyche.
The Blitz/Sierra Cycle/O'Neal/661-sponsored Widen won the second moto, with Singer taking second once again. From third on, things were a little different, because some of the previous front-runners got swallowed up in the sand sections. Third went to Moon; then came Angel Molina, Hanna, Jonathan Finman and Cody Granados.
Hunter had to work a little harder for his overall in the 250 Junior class, because he had to beat Widen. In the first moto, Widen jumped out front, and at the completion of lap one Hunter was in second. Widen gapped Hunter by a few bikelengths on the first two laps. Then Hunter picked up the pace and closed in on Widen. As the two came through the rhythm section, Hunter came along the left side of Widen on the last tabletop jump just before the scoring section. Then Hunter tried to get on the inside of Widen on the left-hand turn, but Hunter came in too hot and touched his front wheel to Widen's rear and highsided. Hunter got going again, but relinquished second to Mike Villegas. Hunter moved back around Villegas just before getting the white flag. Widen held on for the moto win, followed by Hunter, Villegas, Moon and Singer.
Hunter charged to the front on the opening lap of the second moto. From that point on, the Cycle Gear/Drew Brothers-sponsored Hunter kept the spot for the moto win, while Widen and Villegas battled for second, with Widen getting the nod. Fourth was Moon. Then came Garret Artaz and Singer.
Dillon Huddleston (409, above) took the overall in the 450 Pro class with a 1-1 score. In the first moto, it was Austin White with the early lead, over Huddleston and Richard White from Cleburne, Texas. By the time the leaders came back into view in front of the bleachers, it was Huddleston out in front, over Austin White. Huddleston gapped Austin by four seconds through the first half of the moto. Then Austin kept charging and was catching Huddleston, closing the gap to one second. However, he ran out of laps, and Huddleston took the moto win.
Huddleston absconded with the lead in the second moto, while White and White pursued. Austin White was trying again to catch up from second, with Richard White in third. Austin tried again to put in a late-moto charge, but to no avail. The Motion Pro/EVS/Rusk Racing/FMF/Dunlop-backed Huddleston took the win, over Austin White and Richard White.
