WASHOUGAL, WA
Honda-mounted Alyas Wardius (433, above) walloped the competition at Washougal MX Park, site of round two of the AMA District 27 Motocross Series. Wardius won three of the four motos he entered on the day and collected the overall Open B victory. Wardius won the opening 250 B class moto but spent much of moto two forging through the pack and could only muster a sixth-place finish and third overall, spoiling what had been shaping up to be a perfect day for the former minicycle champion.
Russian Serge Astaykin (118) made it two wins in a row in the Open Pro class, topping both motos with relative ease. Astaykin, who now lives just across the Columbia River in Portland, hammered the competition, which included a good-sized field of Northwest Pros. Astaykin got out front in the opening moto and stayed there for the victory, ahead of Yamaha rider Trevor Brooks and KTM-mounted Oregonian Duane Rigel.
Moto two was much the same: Astaykin grabbed the lead at the start of the moto and stayed in command to the finish. Yamaha rider Steele Angle-Davidson, a first-year Pro rider, ran second for much of the race until Rigel, who came from well back in the field, got by the teenager on the final lap to place second. Brooks and Chris Porter rounded out the top five.
Yamaha rider Tyler Hansen trailed both Wardius and Oregon's Cody Boehmer in the first Open B moto but got a great start in the second moto and took advantage of a poor start on Wardius' part to hold the point position from start to finish. Boehmer ran second from the get-go to the checkered flag to finish ahead of Jimmy Sagnis, Josh McBride, and Holt, who narrowly edged an on-the-move Wardius, who'd started off the moto near the tail end of the 18-rider field but charged all the way to sixth by moto's end.
Perhaps the finest performances of the day were Wardius' rides in the 250 B class. While Rigel, who made the trek from southern Oregon, was the cream of the crop in the 250 Pro class, it was Wardius' spirited performances in both combined 250 Pro/B motos that had the spectators buzzing. Wardius started some 30 seconds back in the second wave of riders (the B class) and not only narrowed the gap on the Pro pack in both outings but caught and passed the majority of the Pro riders. Rigel won both Pro motos to complement his earlier second-place finish in the Open class. Wardius passed the second-place Pro rider, Nic Wolfer, late in the moto to trail only Rigel at the finish. Wolfer, who's been away attending college and hadn't competed for quite some time, was impressive and trailed Rigel (1-1) and Porter (2-3) overall.
