BRONSON, MI
The racing was cool and the action was hot at Log Road MX, but none were hotter than Tim Walker (411, above), as the Ottawa Lake Michigan rider put his Championship Powersports Honda out front in both the 14-24 and Open B classes.
The first 14-24 moto was a battle royale between Walker and Tyler Hill (164, below). Walker got the start, but Hill's Honda was glued to Walker's rear fender. Hill was hauling, and he found his way around Walker in the back part of the track and then went to work on opening up a lead. Walker had other plans, though, and used a smooth and precise riding style to keep Hill honest. Kyle Straube was rockin' the two-smoker and running a solid third, with Leevont Martin and Chad Cooley in tow. Hill crossed the line still out in front, with Walker in tow, but as the old racing adage says, "a second in moto one is as good as a win." Straube was third, holding off Martin and hare scrambler Cooley, who rounded out the top five.
Moto two was looking to be a good one, as Walker grabbed another holeshot, and this time Hill wasn't in the runner-up spot. Walker used the start to his advantage and rode off with the win, as well as the overall, while Hill had to fight his way through some traffic before dropping into the runner-up spot, for second overall. Straube didn't make the second moto, allowing Martin to take third in moto two, which would match his overall finish spot as well. Michael Kluga, who'd placed sixth in moto one, stepped up his game in moto two and rolled his Honda in to a solid fourth for fourth overall. Cooley was once again fifth, and fifth overall.
In Vet action, Chris Hillman (39, right) controlled the Over 35 class. However, it didn't come without a battle.
The Vet guys love the Log Road layout and track prep, and good turnouts follow. Brian Woodbury nailed the Over 35 holeshot and was on the gas aboard his B&B Trucking Kawasaki. However, he had company, as Hillman and Dan Kraska were in tow. Hillman was all over Woodbury, and the two crafty vets went to war. Woodbury was riding well, and Hillman had his hands full, first going inside, then outside, trying to find some daylight. Kraska was back a bite and watching the battle in front of him unfold. Hillman found a line around Woodbury near the halfway point and began to pull away en route to taking the first-moto win. Woodbury's troubles were not over yet, as Kraska was on the move as well, making the pass into second before the checkered flag fell and dropping Woodbury to third. Cory Peterson and Samuel Arnold completed the top five.
In moto two, Hillman controlled the start, and with a clear track ahead, he put the hammer down and ran off with a second-moto win and the Over 35 overall victory. The fight for second was a close one, as Woodbury, Kraska and Cory Perriton were now duking out. Kraska found a groove and moved into the runner-up spot for good on lap three, setting himself up for second overall. Perriton (3-3) held off Woodbury to take the last place on the podium, with Woodbury (3-4) in fourth, one spot ahead of Arnold (5-5).
The next Log Road race weekend is May 15 and 16 and will feature Minicycle Mayhem Weekend: In addition to all the regular GLMX features, there will be a special focus on the Mini guys.
