Loretta Lynn AMA Amateur National MX Championships Area Qualifier and AMA District 3 Points Race
Day 2: Broome-Tioga Sports Center

Zaveral Zaps Dougherty at Broome-Tioga

BINGHAMTON, NY

Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the Broome-Tioga Sports Center, opened the 2010 season with a two-day Loretta Lynn area qualifier. Day two was also an AMA District 3 points race, and more than 600 riders showed up to race the technical Broome-Tioga racecourse. Due to the large turnout, qualifiers were run in multiple classes.

Ryan Zaveral, in his rookie season as an Expert, battled with veteran Pro/Expert and fellow Honda pilot Mitch Dougherty. Both riders consider Broome-Tioga their home track and know the challenging racecourse well. Zaveral dominated the Amateur class in 2009 and was bumped up to the Expert ranks for 2010. Zaveral didn't exactly set the world on fire with his results on Saturday, but on Sunday he captured the top tier of the extremely competitive 250 Pro Sport podium.

Zaveral, Dougherty, Robbie Zahurak and Josh Emmi led the pack out of the first turn in the opening moto. Zaveral and Dougherty were still running first and second when the leaders exited the front rhythm section. Matt Babbitt, Kyle Willis and Colton Harrison followed.

Zaveral started lap two with a four-second lead over Dougherty. Babbitt held third, while Zahurak battled with Harrison, taking fifth, and then passed Willis to secure fourth.

Dougherty began to close the gap on Zaveral on lap three; reducing Zaveral's lead to three seconds and even further on lap four. By the start of lap five, Dougherty was only two bikelengths back. If Zaveral made a mistake, it would cost him the win. Zaveral bobbled in the final corner of the last lap and Dougherty slipped by to take lead and the win. Zaveral had to settle for second. Babbitt, Zahurak and Derek Hall completed the top five.2010 0411 BTSC Ryan Zaveral 22 vs Josh Emmi 961

Ryan Zaveral (22) and Josh Emmi (961) shared a huge holeshot in the final 250 Pro Sport moto. Derek Hall, Dougherty and Justin Murray rounded out the top five, but it didn't take Dougherty long to dice his way into second, behind Zaveral. Zaveral started the second lap with a three-second lead. Emmi was now third, with Hall and Murray fourth and fifth.

Dougherty began to reel in Zaveral, and the two started lap three separated by only two seconds. Harrison passed Murray, taking fifth.

By the start of lap four, only a second separated Zaveral and Dougherty, and only three seconds separated Emmi in third and Hall in fourth. Hall caught and passed Emmi for third at the top of the hill just before the huge Broome-Tioga ski jump.

Zaveral took the white flag just a bikelength ahead of Dougherty. Zaveral, knowing Dougherty would attempt a pass in the last corner, did everything he could to protect the inside line, and that strategy paid off with the final moto-win and the overall. Dougherty had to settle for second. Hall finished third, and third overall. Emmi finished fourth and Harrison fifth.
