GRANTSBURG, WI
The District 23 motocross season opened up in the deep sand of Grantsburg Motocross Park. Sheldon Fratzke (82, above) and Bill Medek proved to be ready for the season to start, as both took wins in competitive A classes. Weather more often associated with May or June greeted the more than 200 riders who showed up to take on the whoop-filled playground. This was the only race scheduled for the track in 2010.
The promoters, the Straight Arrow Enduro Riders, were still mourning the loss of longtime club member Ross Thompson, who passed away unexpectedly last July at the age of 39. The club had stickers made emblazoned with his familiar number 66 and made them available to anyone who wanted something to remember him by. District 23 had earlier declared that the champion of the 125cc class would be given an award in his honor. Thompson was running strong in the class' inaugural season at the time of his passing.
The first premier class on the docket was the Open A class. In moto one, Cody Thomsen (682, above) led Cody Breitbach (700), Dan Holmes (3) and the rest of the class out of the first turn. Thomsen and Holmes were running one-two early on, until Holmes went down on lap two. By the fourth lap, Josh Patzoldt had worked his way into the lead, followed by Medek. Though Medek got close a few times, the order remained unchanged to the finish. They were followed by Cody Breitbach, Holmes, and Korey Beach.
Tackling a much rougher track in the second moto, Dan Holmes (3, above) took the early lead and never looked back en route to taking the win. Medek was again second, and his hard-charging pair of seconds gave him the overall. He was followed by Patzoldt (1-3), Holmes (4-1), Breitbach (3-4) and Beach (5-5).
Medek again fought with Josh Patzoldt (85, right) in the Over 30 A class, and the two traded moto wins. Medek's 1-2 punch topped Patzoldt's 4-1 score.
Fratzke does not yet qualify for the Over 30 class, so his age class would be the Over 25 A class. He led all but one lap of both motos. The top five finishers all finished both motos in the same position. After Fratzke, it was Kyle Love, Michael Mikrot, new A rider Chas Kadlec, and Norman Miesen.
The only class in which Medek and Fratzke went head to head was the 250 A contest. Both riders ride two-strokes. They did not get much of chance to battle, as Fratzke got the better starts and ran out front in both motos. Medek had to fight from quite a way back to get into second in the first moto, but with a better start he stayed close to Fratzke in moto two. The rest of the top five also finished both motos the same. The overall order was Fratzke, Medek, Breitbach, Nathan Rosso and Mikrot.
Other double-class winners on the day included Noah McPherson, who topped 85cc (9-11) and 85cc (9-12) classes; Shane Rhode, who won the 125cc and Schoolboy classes; Tanner Anderson, who showed good form in sweeping the 250 C and 14-24 C classes; and club member and part-time Brazilian Craig Cherrington, who rode to victory in the Over 40 B and Over 45 contests.
