PERRIS, CA
The Vet X racers dodged the bullet for the final two rounds of their Winter Series, as they put in two races around a rainstorm. Rains hit Perris Raceway shortly after the races on Saturday afternoon, drenching the track. The Perris track crew prepped the course and let the rain fall, which made for perfect racing conditions the following day. The practices shaped the track into a very tacky and smooth consistency that is rarely seen in Southern California, much to the satisfaction of the riders who braved the cloudy weather. The track conditions helped contribute to a very safe and clean day of racing.
The racing action was strong as the riders battled for final placing in the points. Despite the lower-than-usual turnout, every class had plenty of battles.
The Over 30 Amateur class thundered off the gate, with Craig Contreras (30, right) buried back in the pack. Ahead of him was a three-way battle for position, but Contreras was working his way forward and by the end of the first lap he was in fourth position. Over the next laps, he worked his way forward into second, behind race leader Bobby Hanousek. On the final lap, Contreras took advantage of a mistake on Hanousek's part and got by for the lead; he took the checkered flag, followed by Butch Veenstra and Matt Roddy.
In the second moto, it was Contreras shooting to the lead, determined to get the second-moto win with ease. Hanousek moved into position to battle for the lead, and the two riders fought back and forth. With two laps left, Contreras took the lead and then held on for the overall victory with his 1-1 finishes. Rick Kozlik (4-2) was second overall, while Roddy (3-3) rounded out the podium for the day.
The Over 50 Novice class started their first moto with a battle right from the gate. Pete Smith took the early lead, followed by Henry Kalisiak and Randy Roberts (49, left). The battle for second place was shaping up to be tight, as Roberts and Kalisiak were trading positions in the early laps. On lap four, Kalisiak was able to stay ahead of Roberts and chase down the leader, claiming the lead by the end of the lap. In the closing laps, the riders held their positions, with Kalisiak taking the win, followed by Smith and Roberts.
In the second moto, it was Kalisiak claiming the early lead, followed by Smith and Roberts. The riders were all in contention in the early laps, but Kalisiak was able to hold on for the win, with Smith and Roberts repeating their results from the first moto. The overall win went to Kalisiak (1-1), with second belonging to Smith (2-2) and Roberts (3-3) rounding out the podium.
