Pacific Coast Pro-Am Championship
Round 1: La Grange OHV Park

Smith Forges Ahead to the Victory

LA GRANGE, CA

Central California's CMA Racing and Northern California's E-Street MX showcased talented riders from their respective regions at the La Grange OHV Park in La Grange, California. There was a great turnout due to a break from recent rainstorms, a great track that offered sweet conditions, and cash prizes.

The climax was the Pro-Am event, which was held after the first set of motos of the event's 18 races. Qualifying Pro and Amateur riders who performed well in their classes' first motos were invited to participate in the race. Riders were placed throughout the track depending on in which class they'd competed; more advanced riders had to start further back. Mike Power, who finished in the top spot in the first 450 Pro moto, and Vet Pro Scott Davis had a huge disadvantage, as the two were placed a quarter-mile behind other riders.

During the first lap, Joshua Paloma and Travis Harden were leading the pack and swapping that lead back and forth. Power and Davis had a lot of ground to make up, and the two Pro riders pushed themselves as they chased down their Amateur counterparts. The gap was closing fast as Power and Davis dug hard. Pushing himself too hard, Mike Power suffered a spill as he rushed down the 200-foot hill that sits right before the gate.

Shortly after Power's spill, Davis found the pack of riders and threatened the leader, Harden. Though Harden was stingy with the lead, Davis made a move on the inside and then quickly separated himself from the pack.

Coming from seemingly out of nowhere, Jake Smith began to apply pressure on Harden for the second spot. Smith made an inside move on Harden for the position on the last lap. For Smith, this move offered more than a second-place finish, as Davis let up on the final turn to let other riders pass him. Smith took the checkered flag first. Davis, being one the organizers and promoters of the day's race, had wanted to race without taking any prize money.

"I just wanted other riders to have a chance," Davis said.

Scott Davis is a former AMA racer who now promotes races with his company E-Street Racing and also helps young up-and-coming riders at his motocross school in Northern California.
